Summary:
As an entry-level radiation control technician (RCT I), provides routine radiation monitoring support to Laboratory operations as a member of a deployed team in the health physics operations group, RP-1. Majority of time spent is in on-the-job training and working under supervision. Performs workplace surveillance of radiological conditions by conducting routinely scheduled monitoring and surveys. Assists more experienced RCTs with routine and non-routine radiation protection activities to ensure compliance with procedures and 10CFR835. Implements radiation protection procedures; applies these to a wide range of activities, and assists in implementation of radiation work permits. Responds, with other radiation control personnel, to radiological spills or other emergency situations. Work is reviewed for soundness of judgment, overall adequacy and accuracy. Impact of work is usually limited to well-defined area of a project or specific assignment. Assignments have a narrow focus while working within established priories, procedures, process requirements or specifications, and involve limited use and/or application of technical principles, theories and concepts. Consequence of error may include serious radiological safety events, including injury to self or others, as well as noncompliance with 10CFR835, with potential for Laboratory fines under the Price-Anderson Amendments Act. Work involves moderate physical demands, such as lifting and carrying radiation protection instruments and wearing personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection. Work may be outdoors and may be scheduled at times other than regular work hours.
This is an entry-level position for those having some relevant experience, training and/or education. Must learn job skills and become familiar with Laboratory policies in order to complete assignments. Limited use and/or application of technical principles, theories and concepts. Tasks performed are relatively simple, but may require the application of basic skills related to the technical specialty. Incumbent develops solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope. Employees in jobs at this level have minimal responsibility for end products. Directions given by supervisor are specific and detailed, and work is closely supervised.
Education:
Position typically requires a high school diploma and a minimum one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
