Position Title:Racial Justice Director
Department:Racial Justice
Reports To: Chief Program Officer (CPO)

Job Summary:
This position at YWCA Asheville will be charged with overseeing the organization’s Racial Justice Programming internally and externally, leading advocacy efforts, cultivating strategic partnerships through community participation and collaboration.
Essential Functions:
RACIAL JUSTICE PROGRAMMING:
Serving as the lead facilitator and trainer for Racial Justice programming and consultant work. The Racial Justice Director will Cross-train other YWCA staff to expand capacity to provide Racial Justice programming internally within the organization and externally in the broader Western North Carolina Community.
YWCA Racial Justice Workshop
The YWCA engages over 350 community members annually in our Racial Justice Workshop Series. The series is currently (3) parts. The content can be delivered both virtually and in-person. Attendees include community members, tailored groups, and organizations interested in increasing their Racial Justice Acumen.
The Racial Justice Director is responsible for:
  • Attendee recruitment- including community partners, YWCA staff and board. With a goal of 100% staff and board participation
  • Workshop scheduling and logistics. Including the ongoing recruitment, coordination and training of workshop facilitators
  • Actively engaging in continued learning to further develop Racial Justice workshop content and resources shared with attendees
  • The ongoing evaluation of workshop attendee experience, learning, and growth via pre and post surveys
  • Grant reporting
Until Justice Just Is (UJJI)
Until Justice Just Is, is an annual national YWCA USA campaign. This campaign unifies our association with others in the goal of increasing awareness around issues of racial inequality and furthering our efforts to eliminate racism. UUJI content can be tailored to fit the context of each local YWCA Association.
The role of the YWCA Racial Justice Director is:
  • Organize and coordinate a cross-departmental group of YWCA leaders in designing, implementing, delivering, and evaluating the outcomes of UUJI Programming.
  • The goal of UUJI is to elicit widespread community support for Racial Justice centered programming throughout Asheville during the month-long campaign. The Director will work collaboratively with the Advancement Team, Board of Directors, Program Staff, and Chief Program Officers to support a planning committee who will champion the planning of anti-racism events throughout Asheville- delivering a robust calendar of events planned and executed by partner organizations.
Internal Organizational Initiatives
  • In collaboration with the CEO, the Racial Justice Director will support initiatives aimed at increasing organizational equity. Including, but not limited to equity audits, and staff experience surveys .
  • In response to the internal equity audit, develop an internal strategy for YWCA staff and programs. The strategy will encompass creating a Racial Justice framework, living into our mission as an anti-racist organization, and incorporating a deeper analysis of education and awareness regarding intersectionality, systemic racism, racial equity, etc.
  • Joy and Justice Content Club and Racial Justice Lending Library
    • The Joy and Justice Content Club and Racial Justice Lending Library offer staff an opportunity to engage with written, oral, and visual social justice content. Through programming, such as lunch and learns, asynchronous google classrooms, and events, the Racial Justice Director will facilitate opportunities for YWCA to continue their learning and growth in issues of social justice.
  • Partner with the HR Director to enhance mission alignment in all areas of staff experience and professional development
  • Serve as a committee member on the Employee Advisory Committee (EAC)
  • Serve as a committee member on the YW Professional Development Planning Committee

Strategic Partnerships and Community Collaboration
  • Act as YWCA staff representative for the Racial Justice Coalition (RJC).
  • Serve as YWCA Asheville representative and point of contact on conference calls, webinars and partnerships with YW USA Racial Justice & Civil Rights Mission Impact Group and Public Policy & Advocacy Team.
  • Be actively engaged in community-wide initiatives that center issues of Racial Justice and equity.
  • Identify new opportunities, internal and external, that enhance and meet the needs and scope of YWCA Asheville’s Racial Justice Programming.
  • Conduct community outreach and build and maintain collaborative partnerships throughout the community

ADVOCACY:
  • Provide staff leadership for the YWCA Advocacy Committee working directly with Advocacy Committee Chair and CEO to create an annual Advocacy Agenda, organizing internal and external Advocacy efforts, and planning advocacy campaigns related to social and Racial Justice issues.
  • Coordinate efforts and activities around civic and voter engagement.

COMMUNICATIONS/ADVANCEMENT:
  • Actively recruit participants to Empower Hour and promote Empower Hour at Racial Justice workshops.
  • Produce Racial Justice content for newsletters, blog posts, social media and earned media in collaboration with Marketing and Communications.
  • Manages content on website Racial Justice Pages.
  • Participate with Crisis and Communications teams in responding to acts of racism and social injustice.

BUDGET:
  • Monitors expenses to stay within the assigned budget.
  • Is accountable for revenue items within the RJ Budget

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, communication, education, or related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years in a related field i.e. racial or social justice organizing or training, DEI education, social work, human resources specialized in DEI

CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES:
  • Deep commitment to equity and justice including, but not limited to racial, gender, and economic justice
  • Understanding of LGBTQIA+ and its racial intersections
  • Lived experience that reflects the mission of YWCA of Asheville
  • Ability to interact with people of multiple cultures
  • Strong commitment and connection to communities of color
  • Ability to prioritize and be transparent in work
  • Is able to maintain privacy and can navigate confidential information

NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS
  • Deep understanding of intersectionality, social movements, and Racial Justice.
  • Deep comfort with conducting and facilitating hard conversations and navigating conflict
  • Strong interpersonal skills including fluency in intercultural communication.
  • Demonstrated skills in public speaking, panel moderation, communications, and writing.
  • Passion and interest in workshop and group facilitation. Experience working with adult learners.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills.

IDEAL SKILLS
  • Proficiency in (or ability and willingness to learn) Google suite and digital platforms like social media (Instagram and Facebook), Zoom, Mailchimp, Canva, and WordPress.
  • Highly organized with excellent time management skills.
  • Experience with circle facilitation and Mindful Facilitation methods.

HOURS OF WORK: Monday- Friday- Occasional evenings or weekends.
Pay: $55,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
