R & D Product Excellence & Sensory Scientist

What you will do:
The R&D Productand Sensory Scientist plays a key role in Tillamook's brand objectives, where innovation and consumer satisfaction are required for competitive growth and sales. This R&D role will actively participate with sales, marketing and consumer insights to demonstrate the unique Tillamook flavors, quality, make process, and heritage of our branded and non-brandeD Products to achieve the brand objective to up level consumer expectations of everyday dairy. This role will support Tillamook's competitive advantage in all our product categories by validating superior sensory characteristics, establishing quality benchmarks, guardrails for our ingredients and packaging, and executing a winning strategy for contests and awards. The product and Sensory Scientist will also help to investigate quality improvements, culinary performance, consumer science studies, and project management of new specialty and unique food service products.
This position plays a central role in the Tillamook branded innovation process, acting as a steward and comfortably mentors additional New Product Development Scientists on CI, quality, and cost savings projects, managing and conducting technical research, interfacing with 3rd party researchers, developing products for the Tillamook brand, and traveling to plant trials and co-manufacturers. Through these key competencies the R&D Productand Sensory Scientist will ensure continued and enhanced competitive advantage of the Tillamook brand.
Here's a day in the life:
  • Develop and lead internal sensory panel for descriptive analysis, benchmarking, and competitive assessment of products across all Tillamook branded categories
  • Perform experiments to test product quality, for both customer and consumer expectations, and demonstrate culinary performance advantages
  • Support Product Excellence team to train cross functional departments, sales, and marketing to build and promote the unique brand value in Tillamook products
  • Work with cross-functional teams to determine quality and cost improvements in all categories
  • Interface with university and private research firms. Engage in relationships which allow Tillamook to lead instead of follow industry research direction. Form and lead consortiums dedicated to precompetitive research in areas that benefit our branded business
  • Manage comanufacturers and formulation development for Tillamook branded food service products
  • Researches ideation related to new technologies which could offer competitive advantage to the business
  • Design robust statistical industrial experiments with defined outcomes and success

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Food Science or related field
  • Bachelors 4 years' experience in dairy ingredient field
  • Masters 3 years' experience in dairy ingredient field
  • PhD 2 years' experience in dairy ingredient field
  • Must have varied food experience including dairy manufacturing, with working depth of knowledge of formulating recipes, BOM development, processing technologies, and consumer sensory science
  • The successful candidate will have previous experience in the following: Sensory Sciences and Descriptive Analysis, Microsoft Office Suite, Statistical Software, Manufacturing Methodology, Design of Experiments (DOE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Project Management Procedures, and Data Analysis
  • Must be personable and able to interact internally at all levels of the organization and externally with outstanding verbal, written and collaborative skills
  • Must have extensive experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Valid Oregon Drivers License with acceptable driving record
  • This position is based in Tillamook, OR
