Population Health Sciences
The Department of Population Health Sciences brings together full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty, as well as additional faculty with secondary appointments, committed to conducting research on the individual, social, structural, and community factors that create health disparities in the population and to design and implement interventions to promote health and increase health equity. Faculty research interests include all aspects of population health including adolescent health, cancer detection and outcomes, cardiovascular health, community-based participatory research, global health, health communication and messaging, health disparities, health of LGBTQ+ populations, health services research, HIV care and prevention, infection prevention and control, Latinx health, men's health, mental health, obesity, sexual health, substance use and cessation, including alcohol and tobacco use, suicidality, and violence against women among many others. Faculty expertise areas include anthropology, behavioral science, biostatistics, epidemiology, health education, health communication, implementation science, public health law, and qualitative, survey, and mixed methodologies.
The Opportunity:
The Qualitative Research Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day activities of a National Institute of Mental Health grant examining the effects of individual and community protective factors on suicide risk among Black sexual and gender minority youth. We will recruit 625 Black sexual and gender minority youth aged 13 to 26 in the U.S. via social media marketing. All participants will complete an online survey every 3 months over an 18-month period. A subsample of 450 participants will complete 1 of 3 burst daily diary surveys over the 18-month study period, and a subset of 180 participants will complete a one-time telephone individual interview. This collaborative study involves an interdisciplinary team of investigators from the University of Central Florida, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, New York University, and Indiana University.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the research study "A Strengths-Based, Intersectional Approach to Suicide Prevention Among Black Sexual and Gender Minority Youth."
  • Oversee participant enrollment into the study, including confirming eligibility and consenting participants via telephone.
  • Oversee qualitative data collection, including helping develop the interview guide, scheduling and conducting all interviews, securely uploading and transmitting interviews to the transcription service, and reviewing transcripts for accuracy.
  • Lead thematic coding of qualitative data; Assist with qualitative data analysis.
  • Supervise research assistants.
  • Assign participants a study ID number and maintain a separate database that links participants' names and contact information with their ID numbers.
  • Manage the ordering of Amazon gift card codes as honoraria and distribute honorariums to participants after completing each survey assessment or interview.
  • Work with the study Community Advisory Board on requested activities, including all pilot-testing activities.
  • Report annually to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and develop and submit modifications to the protocol, as needed.
  • Collaborate on the preparation of presentations, research publications, and NIH reports.
  • Perform other related duties assigned or deemed appropriate by the Principal Investigators (PIs), including but not limited to required University and college trainings.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in psychology, sociology, anthropology, social work, or public health, with additional preference for Ph.D./Dr.PH/Sc.D. (or doctoral training; ABD) in public health or a relevant social science discipline.
  • Prior experience conducting qualitative and/or mixed-methods research, particularly individual interviews, and strong qualitative data coding and qualitative/mixed-methods data analysis skills.
  • Preference for applicants with at least 1 year's experience as Study Coordinator or project director of a large federally-funded study.
  • Previous experience with Atlas.ti or other software for coding qualitative data.
  • Prior experience working in the area of Black LGBTQ youth physical or mental health/suicide prevention; and/or experience and comfort interacting with the Black LGBTQ community.
