Under the supervision of the Automation Chemistry Supervisor and the Laboratory Manager, the Assay and QC Specialist will be responsible for writing SOPs and keeping medialab updated, keeping the lab manual updated , onboarding new Assays including writing and developing the prevalidation plan and the validation plan for approval . Help to perform and verify the lot to lot checks for new reagents or qc that are needed. The Assay and QC Specialist will help in troubleshooting different aspects of the assays including calibration, qc, CAP survey issues or instrument issues that may contribute to an assay issue. Reviewing of all QC statistics for Autochemistry Assisting with inventory control will also be part of the Assay and QC Specialist. Competency and educating of the staff on a new assay or procedure. provides technical assistance to the staff in regards to assay performance and qc issues. Cooperatively and proactively assists in other areas as needed in a teamwork oriented environment. Maintains all Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards at all times. Maintains effective communications and harmoniously transfers information of all new and revised procedures to employees. Follows all CHAMP and HRO standards . Maintains operational effectiveness and assumes full responsibility for continuing education requirements, licensure, and expertise to adapt as needed to an expanding department with increased testing complexity

Responsibilities
  • 1. Demonstrates knowledge of all aspects of a given assay, including such concepts as analytical theory , control evaluation, reference ranges, critical values, clinical significance of the assay, instrumentation used , reagent stability, calibration, etc
  • 2. Demonstrates the ability to write laboratory procedures that conform to CLSI, CLIA, CAP and NYS DPH standards. Reviews and updates procedures on an annual or as-needed basis. Ensures that all staff in the section have read and understand all applicable procedures and/ or revisions
  • 3. Performs tests according to laboratory procedures with acceptable accuracy and precision. Performs at a high degree of skill with regards to analytical instrumentation, including operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures
  • 4. As requested, in conjunction with the Medical Director, Lab Manager, and the Supervisor develops and /or evaluates new tests and methods including statistical testing, reagent issues, tests codes /fees, LIS issues, staff training, etc. Makes recommendations about implementation of these procedures
  • 5. Performs a wide variety of technical duties to ensure continuous reporting of accurate results
  • 6. Monitors all aspects of the assays to ensure proper performance of each assay on a daily basis
  • 7. Ensures that proper procedures are being followed by the staff; intervenes and takes corrective actions when improper procedures are being utilized
  • 8. Along with Laboratory Manager and the Supervisor, develops and implements education and competency assessment materials used for staff training. Utilizes these materials to effectively perform and document staff training and competency in an organized fashion
  • 9. Maybe asked to participate in the performance review of employees as it relates to assay issues
  • 10. Monitor staff compliance with laboratory policies and procedures pertaining to running an assay or qc issues
  • 11. Performs a variety of tasks to ensure continuous day-to-day operations of the laboratory
  • 12. With the guidance of the Medical Director reviews on a regular basis all aspects of the Chemistry Laboratory QC program, including QC data assessment by the staff, documentation of corrective action, review of QC data on a weekly /monthly basis, investigation and documentation of actions in response to outliers/shifts/trends
  • 13. Participates in the Chemistry Laboratory's Quality Assurance/Error Management program. Supervises staff submission of error data, attends monthly QA meetings, analyzes data, participates in the development of corrective actions, implements corrective actions, elicits staff feedback
  • 14. Assists in the CAP Proficiency Testing program for the laboratory section, to ensure that PT samples are tested in a timely fashion and in a manner that is compliant with regulatory requirements; helps to investigate and process CAP action reports, with the guidance of the Lab Medical Director and the management team , as needed
  • 15. Monitors and maintains inventory for the laboratory section; orders laboratory supplies /reagents in a manner that ensures adequate inventory levels; keeps emergency orders to less to a minimum
  • 16. Demonstrates excellent problem-solving skills; responds to problems in an immediate fashion; thoroughly investigates all aspects of the problem
  • 17. Ensures that the laboratory section is in compliance with all items on the current CAP and NYS inspection checklists for testing validations, lot to lot verification and QC procedures and others as needed
  • 18. Researches and presents ideas for new assays or change in an assay to the medical director and manager in an organized fashion
  • 19. Demonstrates knowledge of use of laboratory computer functions including downtime procedures
  • 20. Participates in activities that demonstrate commitment to competency, career growth and professionalism
  • 21. Has excellent communication skills. Effectively communicates with the staff in a clear, concise and respectful manner. Encourages and elicits feedback from staff on work process improvement. Communicates well with other members of the Hospital staff, including physicians, nurses, managers and supervisors of other departments. Maintains open communication with other members of the Department of Laboratory Medicine . Effectively communicates pertinent issues to the Laboratory Manager and Supervisor
  • 22. Participates in continuing education/ professional enrichment and coordinates staff attendance for continuing educational programs offered for the staff
  • 23. Demonstrates a sensitivity to needs of coworkers and patients by monitoring adherence to policies governing confidentiality. Takes immediate action when violations occur
  • 24. Accepts constructive criticism in a positive manner and takes immediate corrective action to improve performance when needed
  • 25. Privately provides valuable feedback to staff. Never openly criticizes or embarrasses staff
  • 26. Keeps the Quality Control software up to date and train staff on proper QC protocols and procedures for use of the Quality Control software

Qualifications

EDUCATION


Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent with MLS / MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent. Continuing education, project involvement, high performance maintenance, and professional commitment required


EXPERIENCE


Two (2) to three (3) years high complexity clinical chemistry laboratory experience as a Medical Technologist


LICENSURE


MLS / MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent


SPECIAL SKILLS


Working knowledge and experience with instrumentation and equipment used in a Clinical Chemistry laboratory . High level efficiency in word processing applications, spreadsheet design / utilization and use of web based resources. High level of knowledge of laboratory information systems preferred. Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner with hospital staff. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are required. The ability to work as a member of a team is essential.
