Street Maintenance Assistant (Part-Time)

Our Public Works Operations Division is looking for individuals to assist our Fleet Team, Street Maintenance Team, and Custodial Team on a temporary, part-time basis. Depending on division needs, some positions may work up to 40 hours per week with a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year (July 1- June 30). The schedule can vary by team, but typically requires early mornings.

Qualified applicants will have successfully proven the following competencies:

Note About Temporary & Part-Time Positions: Part-time positions are not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Temporary and part-time employees are at-will and not covered by the Civil Service System. Some benefits for temporary employees include sick leave, temporary employee retirement plan, and 3.5% bilingual pay if applicable.

Custodial Assistant:

  • Performing room setups.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and replenishing cleaning supplies as needed.
  • Performing minor maintenance work such as replacing light bulbs or minor plumbing repairs.
  • Utilizing cleaning solutions and agents in an accurate and safe manner.
  • Performing all aspects of floor maintenance on carpets, hardwood, tile and various other floor surfaces.
  • Operating small trucks or utility vehicles.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Mechanic Assistant:
  • Performing regular checks on engines to prevent premature wear and ensure optimal engine performance.
  • Assisting in the general maintenance of equipment in the maintenance shop area.
  • Applying lubricants to the moving parts of vehicle engines and to prevent any damage to the engine.
  • Maintaining work and preventative maintenance records.
  • Performing engine cleaning and preventing rust formation on the engine and its parts.
  • Replacing cabin, fuel, air, and oil filters as required.
  • Lubricating the wheel bearings and preventing tire wear whenever required.
  • Ensures safe equipment operation and work practices.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff and the public.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Street Maintenance Assistant:
  • Cleaning and removing debris from streets, gutters, storm drains, catch basins, drainage ditches, sidewalks, by shoveling, raking, sweeping, and picking up debris.
  • Assisting in breaking up pavement, digging holes, cutting trenches, excavating and filling in holes in streets, pathways and other paved surfaces, chipping, using sledge hammer, shovel, pick, spade, rake, hoe, hand tools or jackhammer as directed.
  • Assisting in loading, transporting, and unloading equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to maintenance.
  • May operate vehicles, and light equipment and power tools necessary to complete maintenance.
  • Assisting with setting up traffic control including signs and barricades and directs traffic around work sites.
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance on equipment as necessary.
  • May remove illegal dumping or dead animals from city right of ways as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Custodial Assistant:
  • Knowledge of: Functions, characteristics and proper use and care of common cleaning agents and safe work practices.
  • Ability to: To perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing, or walking. Able to work safely in an environment containing caustic chemicals, cleaning materials, dust and noise. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently with little supervision.
  • Special Requirements: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent education.Possession and continued maintenance of a Valid California Class "C" Driver's License and a good driving record is required.
Mechanic Assistant:
  • Knowledge of: Servicing, maintaining, or repairing vehicles (1 year).
  • Ability to: Work in a noisy environment with fumes from automotive exhausts and solvents; perform heavy manual labor which may include lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds and moving tires and other items weighing up to 75 pounds and work a variety of weather conditions in emergency situations. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Special Requirements: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent education. Possession and continued maintenance of a Valid California Class "C" Driver's License and a good driving record is required.
Street Maintenance Assistant:
  • Knowledge of: Functions, characteristics and proper use and care of common hand tools and safe work practices.
  • Ability to: Be trained in the use of supplies, tools and equipment used in in the work areas as described above in a variety of weather conditions. Basic skills in following simple oral and written instructions; skills in performing manual work, lifting heavy objects up to 90 pounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other persons. Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Special Requirements: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent education.Possession and continued maintenance of a Valid California Class "C" Driver's License and a good driving record is required.
