DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS
JOB SUMMARY: This position is an entry-level job for new hires joining the Department of Public Works. Workers are assigned to work with various work crews in installing pipelines, bridge repairs, paving and patching roadways, posting signs, clearing debris from drainage ditches and right of way clearing.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives instructions and schedules from supervisors on regular maintenance to roads, bridges, etc., as well as any emergency repairs or special projects. Loads truck with materials needed on the job and delivers to the work site and assist in making repairs or paving. Cleans up work site and keeps maintenance and storage areas at and around the shop clean and neat. Responsible for keeping vehicles clean and schedules proper maintenance. Responsible for keeping inventory of needed supplies and materials, reports to supervisor for ordering.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work effectively as a team member in providing excellence in customer service to the citizens of Gordon County. Ability to use various hand tools and light machinery necessary to make repairs, install pipe, signs, spread paving materials, and clear brush and debris. Ability to read instructions, instruction manuals, schedules, and work orders. Ability to do basic math functions to and take inventory. Ability to deal courteously with the public.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Preferred: High School Diploma or Equivalency
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Georgia Driver’s License.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This is a physically demanding position. The work for this position requires that the employee be exposed to a variety of settings and conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold or heat. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles including dust; and risk of electrical shock. The employee will be required to wear a dust abatement apparatus under certain conditions. Noise levels may vary at times, but are usually moderate; however the employee will be required to wear hearing protection under certain conditions. Frequent sitting and driving in truck cab or on equipment for long periods of time. Frequent mount and dismount from cab of truck or off of equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hand with dexterity; reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or work in areas where space is limited. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
