General Description
The City of Middleton seeks a energetic, community focused individual to help engage our Library guests. If you want to work in the exciting downtown hub of activity in Middleton at a busy library setting this is the position for you! We can't wait to meet you.
This position will work on a busy service desk, assist with library programming, create promotional materials, and assist with youth collection maintenance. The ideal candidate for this position will be creative, collaborative, and have excellent customer service skills.
Library Assistants are the Library's most visible and direct customer service link to the patrons served, and perform most of the day to day customer contact and operational tasks across a wide variety of departments and programs. Library Assistants may work in limited department or program areas, or with training and experience perform duties in many areas of the Library's operation.
Library Assistants actively demonstrate a propensity and desire to engage with patrons, provide courteous and prompt service, and advance the library's day to day operations and mission.
Administrative Details:
This is a Non-Regular Part-Time Permanent position. It is not eligible for participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System. This is non-benefitted position, please review the Benefit portion of the job posting for details.

Job Functions
Essential Job Functions:
General duties required of all Library Assistants
- Maintain reliable and regular work attendance and timeliness.
- Provide excellent patron services at service desks. This includes, but is not limited to, reference questions, readers' advisory, program registration/information, database instruction, and general library and community information.
- Provide patron account services including updating and registering new cardholders.
- Perform general circulation tasks such as, but not limited to, placing and processing holds, checking materials in and out, and collecting fines and fees.
- Perform general operational procedures such as opening and closing the library and room reservations.
- Participates in maintaining a safe, clean, and visually appealing environment.
- Straightens materials and re-shelves as needed.
- Assists patrons with general use of computers, photocopiers, microfilm reader, and provides general supervision of computer spaces.
- Assists patrons with personal devices and downloadable content.
- Must be available to work both a flexible or set schedule, including evening and weekend hours.
- Duties performed by some Library Assistants specifically assigned or trained to do so:
- Delivers programming support.
- Creates promotional materials including, but not limited to, flyers, social media posts, and material displays.
- May participate on library related committees.
- Performs other related job duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge
- Working knowledge of library operations and technology preferred
- Communication skills: effectively communicate ideas and information both in written and oral forms and in Standard English.
- Time management: set priorities and follow through to meet assignment deadlines.
- Operate library business technology.
- Bilingual/Multi-lingual skills desired, not required.
- Computer software used and management of computerized files.
Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public and maintain effective public relations.
- Effectively read and understand information contained in memoranda, reports and other formats.
- Comprehend and follow instructions from supervisor, verbally or in written form.
- Calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) without the aid of a calculator.
- Learn, maintain, and improve the skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate continuing education workshops and other library skills learning experiences.
Education, Training and Experience
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; Post-Secondary education preferred or degree preferred.
- One or more years of general customer service preferred.
- One or more years of library, or similar experience, highly preferred.
