Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a regular Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist License plus two years of professional level experience in Public Health nutrition or dietetics in a clinical or hospital setting.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
A master's degree in nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition, food systems management, institutional management, Public Health, public administration or management will substitute for one year of the required experience.
A Ph.D. in nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition, food systems management, institutional management, Public Health, public administration or management will substitute for the two years of required experience.
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:
To serve as a licensed nutritionist responsible for the delivery of a full range of advanced nutrition services to program participants.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Advanced.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Broad from a Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor or a Public Health Nutritionist Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May exercise functional supervision over lower-level Public Health Nutritionists and other nutrition support staff.

LOCATION OF WORK:
Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Public Health Nutritionist 2 by the presence of advanced-level nutritionist duties.

Differs from Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor by the absence of direct supervisory responsibilities.

Examples of Work

May serve as a leadworker over a group of Public Health Nutritionists.

Implements the nutrition component of OPH Public Health programs based on the Louisiana Nutrition State Plan in parish health units.

Evaluates nutritional services provided by OPH using nutrition program standards of practice and quality control criteria.

May participate in the orientation and training of lower-level nutrition services staff.

Interprets state policy and procedures for local nutrition services staff regarding the federally funded Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), and other nutrition programs.

Assists management in developing, implementing, evaluating and monitoring goals, objectives, priorities and standards of nutrition services as prescribed through Louisiana's Nutrition State Plan.

Assists with auditing health records in the assigned parishes to determine patient and/or client adherence and program compliance.

Monitors food preparation techniques, nutrition education classes, WIC food demonstrations, and use of visual aids by nutrition support staff.

Performs and evaluates nutritional assessments on patients and/or clients; develops care plans, counsels, and monitors the progress of the intervention.

Develops high risk individual/family nutrition care plans by evaluating nutritional assessments, medical assessments, and socio-economic data; initiates and follows up on intervention through counseling and referrals.

Interprets scientific information regarding food, nutrition, diet, and health to professionals, agencies and the public by phone conferences, dissemination of educational material, or public lectures.

Interprets Center for Disease Control Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance Data (PNSS); reviews all records for data accuracy and need for follow-up.

Plans community nutrition needs assessments targeting nutrition and physical activity risks for chronic diseases.

Participates in coalition formation with community leaders, businesses, parents, and other professionals to mobilize the community to improve dietary habits and increase physical activity.

Participates in planning and presenting quarterly in-service meetings for nutrition support staff. Coordinates nutrition services with other agencies involved in health services, food and nutrition, or child development.

Presents lectures and workshops to the public using printed and audio-visual materials on topics regarding food, nutrition, diet, health, and Public Health Programs.

Participates in professional continuing education to maintain competency and licensure.
