Job Duties
The Chesapeake Health Department seeks an enthusiastic registered nurse to join our outpatient clinic team. The registered nurse will:
- Provide professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings
- Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management
- Participates in Public Health emergencies and community health assessments
- May supervise support staff
In the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor, Public Health Nurses are required to assume other duties for the districts’ emergency preparedness and response (EP&R) activities, including but not limited to points-of-dispensing (POD) mass vaccination events and shelter coverage. During declared emergencies, this will require an adjustment to work hours, location, job duties as well as participation in trainings to meet Public Health business needs. Additional potential work-schedule variations include participation in community outreach events and other EP&R assignments, such as communicable investigation events and locality emergency shelter duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state
- Required to maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to VDH's driver safety policy
- Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR.
- Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
- Knowledge of Public Health concepts, principles of Public Health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
Additional Considerations
- Demonstrated experience in nursing and experience in health promotion or Public Health is preferred.
- Experience in a Public Health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion.
