ABOUT THE JOB:
This position is part of the Deschutes County WIC program which is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. This Public Health program improves health outcomes and influence lifetime nutrition for families. Nutrition education and breastfeeding support is the cornerstone of the WIC Program.
This position performs client weights and measurements, routine finger stick blood tests using standard procedures, and basic health screening for pregnant and postpartum women, Infants and Children (up to age 5) to determine eligibility for WIC services; provides individual nutrition education and breastfeeding education and support; provides clients with referrals to other community resources; teaches group nutrition education classes; and participates in outreach to eligible populations.
WIC Public Health Educators promote health and nutrition for women, infants, and Children in the WIC program by determining eligibility, completing certification and providing nutrition and breastfeeding education to program participants.

- Interview clients and gathers information regarding medical/nutrition history.
- Determine eligibility for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program.
- Evaluate nutrition status and make appropriate referrals bases on client's needs.
- Provide basic nutrition and breastfeeding counseling.
- Maintain clients' electronic charts and related records.
- Answer and route telephone calls, review and respond to all work related electronic communication and schedule appointments for patients.
- Attend WIC outreach activities as assigned, and occasionally outside of regular business hours.
Knowledge of or experience with:
- Adult learning styles, goal setting and behavior change dynamics.
- The role and importance of nutrition in overall wellness and pregnancy outcomes.
- General Public Health topics and community resources.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Multitasking and maintaining timely, detailed documentation.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others at all times.

$4,860.75 to $6,513.84 per month for a 172.67 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

- Associate's degree in a Public Health related field;
- AND one (1) year of related experience;
- OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Experience or training with the WIC program.
- Specialized training or experience in nutrition (infant and child nutrition preferred); training or experience related to breastfeeding; working with children and infants; and training or teaching youth or adult.
- Experience using electronic health records (EHR).
