NATURE OF WORK This is beginning level work assisting in all phases of Public Health education activities in a local health department. Employees assist in planning and implementing a program of community health education designed to assist individuals and groups in recognizing and solving health problems through the proper selection and use of educational methods. Work involves participating in workshops and conferences to define and promote community health needs. Work is performed under close supervision of a higher-level Public Health Educator.
ILLLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK Collects health and community data to be used in planning Public Health and Public Health educational programs. Assists in the organization of community groups to study community problems. Assists in planning and participating in workshops, conferences, and discussion groups to promote Public Health and Public Health education. Prepares educational exhibits and visual aids. Prepares news releases and radio spot announcements on assigned topics. Prepares and presents talks on health topics, and services provided by the health department to civil organizations and other community groups. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES General knowledge of the functions of community health agencies. General knowledge of methods and techniques used in preparing and disseminating educational information to the public. General knowledge of the techniques involved in preparing and displaying posters, exhibits and other educational visual aids. Ability to present ideas effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, community organizations, and the general public.
ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in health education; or graduation from a four-year college or university and completion of one year of on-the-job training as a Public Health Educator.
