Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification):
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in the State of Ohio.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of substantive legal issues regularly addressed by attorneys in the area of criminal law.
  • History of a demonstrated commitment to providing criminal legal services to indigent clients.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
Job Duties (Summary):
  • The Training Director will conduct research, evaluate, and coordinate the continuing legal education opportunities for the legal staff of the office. Implementation of training programs includes creating training calendars, building curriculum, acquiring presenters, making site arrangements, reviewing evaluations, making recommendations, and conducting needs assessment for future training programs. Additionally, the Training Director will conduct, organize, and monitor the training of newly hired legal staff as proposed by the appropriate division head.
  • The Training Director will work with directors and supervisors of the various divisions of the office in order to plan and schedule ongoing training for the legal staff. Additionally, the Training Director will be the contact with outside agencies offering training opportunities to staff attorneys. The Training Director shall register attorneys for and keep record of the outside training programs staff attorneys attend. Files required CLE reports to the Ohio Supreme Court as necessary. Oversees the coordination of the annual Veterans Day Seminar.
  • In regard to all interns with the office, the Training Director will be responsible for all aspects of their placement with the office. Those duties include but are not limited to: interviewing and hiring of interns, creating and managing the curriculum of the summer program, supervising the summer interns, managing and supervising the academic year externs, and keeping year to year rosters and time logs of interns to be maintained for compliance with future bar inquiries. The Training Director will the office’s liaison to law schools and universities. The Training Director shall maintain the resource library, coordinate access and training with the office’s online legal research service and organize the ordering and distribution of all legal publications for staff.
  • The Training Director will coordinate the offices presence at the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair and coordinate the selection of a hiring class each fall.
    The Training Director will coordinate and run the new lawyer training program.
    The Training Director will supervise the Indigent Defense Clinic by selecting students, teaching the course, and supervising all casework.
  • The Training Director will work closely with the policy and communication staff, the community advisory board, and the diversity equity and inclusion committee to promote the public’s understanding of our offices role.
    Knowledge Skills :
    Employee training and development, legal issues and case management practices, adult learning theories, local training resources available in specific area where employed, agency policies and procedures, government structure and process, desktop publishing software.
    Ability to:
    Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; maintain accurate records; originate routine business letters reflecting standard procedures; prepare meaningful, concise and accurate reports; prepare and deliver speeches before specialized audiences and general public; gather collate & classify information about data, people or things. Organize and interpret extensive variety of legal material in books, journals, or legal documents; communicate verbally and in writing regarding legal issues; establish and develop attorney training materials; coordinate and improve attorney litigation.
