P/T Seasonal Head Lifeguards - 3
Approximately 35 hours per week
This position observes swimmers at the City swimming pools and takes whatever action necessary to maintain Water Safety. Responsible to provide lifesaving skills to swimmers in distress at two municipal pools. Provides Water Safety instruction to swimmers participating in organized programs particularly the learn to swim program at the City swimming pools. Maintains order and a clean pool facility for pool patrons. Reports to the Recreation Supervisor.
Examples of Duties
Personnel Responsibilities: Prepares work schedules and assigns duties to lifeguards and swim instructors. Responsible for in-service training and oversees lifeguards and swim instructors when supervisor is not present.
Customer Service: Provides surveillance of water and pool deck at all times in accordance with Water Safety standards and City policy. Rescues swimmers in distress, administers first aid to the injured, administers CPR or artificial respiration if necessary and calls for emergency assistance when needed. Communicates clearly and politely with the general public and City employees in person and by phone. Provides accurate information. Receives inquiries and complaints in a respectful manner and accurately records them. Provides swim instruction to participants in the learn to swim program according to recognized standards and instruction. Assists with aquatic programs as assigned.
Facility Maintenance: As directed, checks and records the chlorine, PH, and other chemical readings of the pool several times a day and makes adjustments as needed. Checks daily all safety equipment for proper operation, corrects or reports any problems to the supervisor. Inspects for defective equipment, tile, drain covers or any general repairs needed. Maintains cleanliness of pool house, rest rooms, pool, pool deck and perimeter and any equipment associated with the pools on a daily basis.
Record Keeping: Collects payments, issues receipts and prepares financial reports related to the learn to swim program. Completes forms for records including daily attendance, pool chemical usage, incident reports, accident reports and time sheets.
Minimum Qualifications
Prefer individual with six months experience dealing with general public/customer service.
Head Lifeguard: Also must have at least three years previous lifeguard experience.
Head Swim Instructor: Also prefer at least one year experience teaching swim lessons.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
Current Lifeguard Certification
Current Certification in Adult, Child and Infant CPR
Current First Aid Certification.
Current Water Safety Instructor certification (required only if assigned to teach swim lessons; can be obtained after hired).
Supplemental Information
Ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Ability to use independent judgment. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, as well as City employees. Ability to maintain effective operating records and reports. Must maintain basic math skills. Ability to adapt quickly and change priorities to meet service demands.
