What's the role?

Cayuga Integrated Behavioral Health is the newest unit within CMA, driven by a growing team of mental health professionals with expertise in integrated care. CIBH aims to expand access to high-quality, affordable, and evidenced-based mental health care across the Cayuga Health System outpatient care network. We are committed to excellence in clinical service delivery, quality improvement, team-based care, and population health. We are eager to partner with other professionals who share our commitment to expanding mental health access to patients in highest need.

We want to train, maintain, and grow you! CIBH is excited to launch our inaugural training program in for psychologists seeking advanced training in integrated care, specifically, for those wanting in-depth experiencing in a blended model [i.e., Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) and Collaborative Care Management (CoCM)]. Our fellowship is designed to offer a robust training experience to include: evidenced-based clinical service delivery; individual supervision with a licensed psychologist with expertise in blended models; group and peer supervision; monthly didactics specific to high-quality service delivery and program development within integrated care; opportunities to be involved in quality improvement and program evaluation efforts; and ample opportunities for professional development and exposure to networking across several multidisciplinary working groups within Cayuga Health's network. In addition, we are eager to grow a strong pipeline of professionals passionate about integrated care - fellows will be offered an immediate advancement to a full-time credentialed provider following their first year within the program. At this time, fellows will receive similar, but more expansive position opportunities, to include an advanced salary. See additional details below.


What you'll do:

Clinical service delivery:

  • The BHC Fellow provides in-office access to brief assessment, intervention, and consultation services to primary care providers and their patient populations presenting with common mental and Behavioral Health concerns using a combination of prescheduled and same-day/warm hand-off access models.
  • The BHC Fellow offers rapid access, including same day consultation, to an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, Behavioral Health care managers, and consulting psychiatrists to help inform diagnosis and care planning, including support for psychopharmacological interventions delivered by the PCP and/or integrated care team.
  • The BHC Fellow will deliver brief and time-limited evidenced-based interventions for conditions such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, substance misuse, concentration/attention concerns, relational distress, and other commonly occurring mental or Behavioral Health conditions.
  • The BHC Fellow offers expert consultation and provider and patient educational opportunities to improve understanding, identification, and treatment of mental and Behavioral Health issues from the primary care settings. Opportunities also exist for participation in monthly teaching opportunities, as well as training resident learners on topics consistent with integrated care.
  • The BHC Fellow monitors treatment progress through standardized assessments, and works to connect patients to higher levels of mental health care when indicated, including referrals to the collaborative care arm of programming and/or community/specialty mental health referrals.
  • The BHC Fellow actively and proactively participates in quality-improvement initiatives and organizational working groups where interested/indicated.
  • Once trained and experienced in the care model, the BHC will assist in training and onboarding new Behavioral Health professionals to the care team.
  • Opportunities exist to work in a variety of settings, to include adult, pediatric, women's health, and college health populations. Fellows will be able to obtain experience in more than one setting/with more than one population, as interested/desired.

Supervision, Didactic, and other Training Opportunities:

  • Fellow will receive a minimum of two weekly hours of supervised experience. One hour per week will be individual, face-to-face supervision with the BHC Fellow's immediate training supervisor. The second hour, also overseen by a licensed psychologist, will come from a variety of group and peer supervision opportunities to include:
    • Group/peer supervision with peer BHC Fellows related to training and professional development topics with integrated primary care.
    • Bi-monthly peer supervision with full-time, licensed Behavioral Health Consultants delivering services across CIBH program sites.
  • Participation in monthly "Lunch and Learn" presentations approved by the Medical Staff Office for continuing education related to Integrated Primary Care. These monthly seminars are hosted by the CIBH leadership, with opportunities for fellow to presents on topics of interest to them.
  • Opportunities to be involved in quality improvement and program evaluation efforts based on individual interest.
  • Opportunities for professional development time to include work-sponsored time to study and prepare for the EPPP examination in Psychology.
  • CIBH-sponsored membership to the flagstone integrated care national community, Collaborative Family Healthcare Association (CFHA).
  • Access to leaders in the field of integrated care, to include Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Medical Directors/Physician Champions, Nursing Leaders, Advanced Practice Providers, Social Works, Senior Leaders, and other diverse professionals with real-world knowledge and experience related to large-scale systems implementation of a sustainable integrated care model designed to meet community mental and Behavioral Health needs in a resource-limited environment.
  • Our two-year fellowship is structured to both train, and then maintain our professionals. The first year includes several training opportunities and close supervision, with a reduced clinical load to emphasize the importance of skill-acquisition and learning. The second year fellows will have increased independence and autonomy, a greater clinical responsibility, and an immediate advancement in salary. In addition, as our program aims to expand to several new sites over the next few years, we anticipate abundant opportunity to stay on within CIBH and develop into alternative and/or leadership roles will be abundant.

Our ideal candidate will have:

We are seeking individuals with an interest and passion in integrated care, with the following background and training experiences:

  • Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited university/program.
  • Completion of 1750 hours of supervised experience towards NYS licensure as obtained pre-doctorally from an APA-accredited internship.
  • Willingness/ability to apply for a NYS limited permit to practice psychology under supervision.
  • Interest in primary care setting/population. Previous experience and training in integrated care models is valued, but not required, as the cornerstone of the fellowship will include advanced training.
  • Two letters of reference outlining support for the applicant's ability to be successful in a professional training setting/role.
  • In addition, we are seeking the following qualities and skills:
  • Flexibility to adapt to fast-paced medical environments as a member of a dynamic care team.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively in a team setting.
  • Ability to maintain effective and professional relationships with patients and other members of the care team.
  • Experience with assessment and treatment planning for common mental health and/or substance use disorders, as well as working knowledge of differential diagnosis for these conditions.
  • Working knowledge of evidence-based psychosocial treatments and brief behavioral interventions for common mental health disorders (e.g., motivational interviewing, problem-solving treatment, behavioral activation, cognitive behavioral therapy, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of psychopharmacology for common mental health disorders that is within appropriate scope of primary care.
  • Ability to effectively engage patients in a therapeutic relationship, when appropriate.
  • Ability to work with patients by telephone / telehealth as well as in person.
  • Familiarity with using electronic medical record systems.
  • No minimum post-doctoral/post-licensure experience required; on the job training in the clinical service delivery model will be offered. Supervised hours towards NYS licensure are offered. Our goal is to both train and maintain our fellows in roles beyond their first two years, and to see our fellows develop professionally within our expanding program!

By the completion of their first year, fellows are expected to:

  1. Submit paperwork to the NYS Office of Professions for the license in NYS as a Psychologist
  2. Apply and then sit for the EPPP examination in Psychology
  3. Complete and submit the necessary forms and paperwork for licensure in Psychology, and subsequent credentialing with Cayuga Health Partner's payor organizations.

Upon successful completion of the above, Fellows will be offered a full-time licensed role within our program, at a site and location to be determined based on fellow interest and program needs. Upon initiation of their second year, fellows will see a salary increase commiserate with this advancement.
