Job Duties
VMI is a state-supported undergraduate military college (1,200 students) located in the historic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Lexington is a college town (also home to Washington & Lee) rich with history and natural wonders. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy mountain vistas walking along various trails or on a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Charlottesville and Roanoke are an hour away and a visit to Washington, DC is only a three-hour drive.
VMI offers cadets a challenging four-year core curriculum and 14 nationally recognized majors in engineering, the sciences, and the humanities, with an array of enrichment opportunities provided through the Institute Honors Program, undergraduate research, foreign study, internships, and the Institute Writing Program.
Those with professional interest and expertise in counseling young adults are particularly encouraged to apply for this full-time (either 10-month, Aug 1 - May 31, or 12 month year-round) position. Job Duties:
  • Provide short-term individual counseling.
  • Conduct intakes and psychological assessment.
  • Provide substance abuse assessments.
  • Provide consultation services with faculty, staff, parents, and cadets.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate outreach programming for the Corps and assist with cadet health and wellness education and activities.
  • Asist with cadet retention activities.
  • Provide crisis assessment, counseling, and interventions.
  • Provide on-call after-hours coverage on rotating basis with other clinical staff.
  • Remaining involved with local/regional/state/ national organizations related to the department.
  • Follow record keeping guidelines and adherence to professional standards and codes of conduct.
  • Committee service as assigned.
  • The performance of other functions assigned by the Director that contribute to the service offerings of the CCC and the academic mission of the Institute.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in clinical or counseling psychology or closely related field.
  • Licensed or license eligible within the next 3 months in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Demonstrated understanding of adherence to ethical codes and applicable state and federal laws regarding the provision of mental health services.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Doctorate degree in clinical or counseling psychology.
  • Previous training and experience in a college or university counseling center.
  • Well-developed counseling and crisis intervention skills.
  • A collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, respect, and trust towards colleagues.
  • The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of a challenging caseload while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships.
  • A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to high professional ideals.
  • Excellent oral, written and listening communication skills.
  • Licensure as a clinical psychologist, Social Worker, or professional counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
