Psychiatrist - Duties and Responsibilities
Description: The psychiatrist is a member of the healthcare team who works in collaboration with other staff to provide comprehensive healthcare services to patients. The role of a psychiatrist is to assess, maintain, and improve the individual and collective health status of individuals with mental health disorders. The psychiatrist is expected to be involved in all service lines, including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), ketamine infusions and intramuscular injections, Spravato, Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Outpatient (OP), and medication management. As future services are added, the psychiatrist is expected to be involved in those as well. The psychiatrist evaluates patients for services and recommends all services that are indicated for the patient. The psychiatrist then follows up with the patient throughout the course of their care at a frequency based on patient need and service provided. The psychiatrist displays empathy and compassion to all patients and works collaboratively and kindly with all staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee psychiatric care provided to patients; obtain medical histories, perform psychiatric evaluations, order medications and procedures; authorize admissions and renders admitting diagnoses.
Diagnose and create a treatment plan for each patient.
Provide consultation/peer review to other physicians/clinicians; actively participates in activities
intended to improve patient care/facility/program operations.
Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely medical records about each patient, including
observations during examinations
Comply with all applicable laws including HIPAA
Prescribe medication in accordance with California law and professional practice guidelines.
Review incoming reports (e.g. labs) sign, date and follow-up in a timely manner.
Participate in staff outreach and off-site health care programs in the service area as assigned by
the Medical Director.
Assist in updating protocols and principles of practice as requested.
Assist in outside medical public relations functions and medical staff recruitment.
Available for consultation, direction, and on-site care.
Assist in patient discharge planning, especially in terms of health care needs, meets with patient
prior to discharge.
Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
Required Skills:
Knowledge of industry standards.
Knowledge of medications, indications, dosage ranges, side effects, and potential toxicity.
Knowledge of PC software programs is required.
Accurately and timely enters clinical documentation using electronic medical records (EMR)
software.
Written and oral communication skills; must be able to concentrate on work amid distractions
such as noise, conversations and foot traffic.
Must maintain self-control in volatile or hostile situations such as when verbally or physically
confronted in an aggressive manner.
Must be able to work independently with little supervision in an unstructured environment with
multiple demands.
Reading and writing level that can clearly express or understand complex concepts, assessments,
directions and processes or sequences of events.
Ability to represent the program well in interactions both inside and outside the facility.
Working knowledge of psychiatric and mental health standards.
Education and minimum qualification:
Current, unrestricted California Medical License
Current DEA Certificate
Preferred, Board Eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR)
ACLS or Advanced Life Support within 12 months of employment, if appropriate
Line of Authority:
The Psychiatrist reports to the Medical Director.
