Job description

Position
Global Energy Monitor seeks a Project Manager to lead its Global Coal Plant Tracker.
The Global Coal Plant Tracker is an online database that identifies and maps existing and proposed coal-fired power plants. The Project Manager will serve as point person for the tracker, including conducting facility level research; coordinating research and peer reviews, when necessary; developing reports, briefings, analyses, and presentations based on the data; providing support to third-party projects that utilize the data; and staying abreast of relevant energy transition developments and progress at the local, regional, national, and global level.
The Challenge
According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.
About Global Energy Monitor
Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization's founding in 2007, GEM's research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM's data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM's information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.
Note: GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Remote staff need not be based in the United States.
Position Summary and Duties

  • Using and developing spreadsheets and other analytical tools to summarize the state of the Global Coal power fleet and proposed projects at the regional, national, and international levels.
  • Using various global data sources (government websites, company reports, news articles, etc., as well as information from partner organizations) to ensure the database represents the most accurate and timely information for each coal power plant.
  • Writing reports, articles, and blogs summarizing research findings.
  • Analyzing and staying abreast of industry, NGO, media, and governmental data and reports to assess current and emerging trends.
  • Providing editorial support for GEM publications, such as proofreading, data preparation, and development of figures and charts, as needed.
  • Training, planning, and facilitating the day-to-day work of Global Energy Monitor (GEM) researchers working on the project.
  • Collaborating with other Project Managers, researchers, and analysts to ensure data consistency as well as for coal-sector and power-sector wide analyses.
  • Assisting third-party researchers in academia, NGOs, governments, and business organizations seeking to use GEM data and analysis.
  • Creating visual presentations of findings using presentation graphics and online tools, and presenting research findings at meetings, conferences, and other events.
  • Working with data visualization specialists and software developers to maintain and develop websites for presenting tracker results.
  • Creating, formatting, and updating GEM wiki pages for each project.
  • Providing support for other GEM projects, including administrative tasks, as needed.
