Job description

Are you passionate about programs within the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS)? Do you have experience with program facilitation and enjoy engagement in group setting? If you answered yes to all the above, the programs division has an opportunity for you as a Program Specialist!
Under direct supervision of the non-clinical program manager, the selected candidate will facilitate cognitive-behavioral programs for individuals incarcerated in one or more of Nebraska's nine facilities. The cognitive behavioral programs include, but are not limited to, Thinking for a Change (T4C), Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT), 7 Habits on the Inside. Additional duties include providing written feedback for written assignments, tracking participation data, escorting community partners and other program-related tasks as assigned.
The Program Specialist's office will be at Central Office in Lincoln, NE, but work will occur in the various NDCS facilities where services will be delivered. Travel to facilities is required for program delivery. Work hours will be dependent on the need of the facility being worked at and may require some evening and weekend hours.
The NDCS employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 incarcerated individuals, statewide. The department's focus includes programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs for our incarcerated population, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Facilitate classes solo and co-facilitate with other teammates or incarcerated peer facilitators. Create participant rosters using the data management system and established priorities. Working with facility teammates to identify and utilize program space and equipment. Prepare lessons consistent with curriculum. Review written work and provide written feedback. Assist with volunteer programming at facilities. Work closely with program coordinators and other facilitators in all facilities. Complete necessary, required training/certifications as needed to deliver programming. Travel between facilities throughout the state, as needed. Enter and track data relative to program participation, completion, etc.REQUIREMENTS: Associate degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, human services or related field OR two years of experience working with persons referred through the legal system. Must be at least 18 years of age. No felony or domestic abuse related convictions.
PREFERRED: Bilingual in Spanish and English. Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, human services, education, communication, or related field. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to adapt to various situations. Experience teaching/facilitating or otherwise working with adult learners in a classroom/group environment, including diverse students. Experience providing instruction and/or facilitating programs to justice-involved individuals. Experience as a trained/certified facilitator for MRT, T4C, 7-Habits, or other evidence-based programming. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
OTHER: Transcripts required prior to appointment. Must have a valid driver's license. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: a medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.Knowledge of: adult learning styles, facilitation and teaching techniques. Ability to: inspire self-motivation of students to engage and complete programming; be adaptable with ability to organize, prioritize and plan strategically; communicate effectively with incarcerated individuals, staff and the public; exercise leadership and sound judgment; operate within established guidelines; communicate with a wide range of people in various situations; write reports and make recommendations; understand and apply instructions.Employment Type: PERM FULL TIME
