Program Specialist for Overnight Camp 
Looking for a summer job that makes a difference, join our 2024 camp staff today! Our Overnight Camp is a place where energetic and passionate staff come together to provide a safe and positive learning environment for campers ages 5-17. At Girl Scouts GCNWI camps we have a wide variety of opportunities for you. Campers and staff alike spend the summer living outdoors, trying new activities, gaining independence, and building long-lasting relationships.

As a Program Specialist you will be critical to the success of the summer as part of the leadership team and the first-line resource for problem solving for campers and counselors. In this role you will supervise and guide campers and counselors through progressive learning experiences in an assigned specialty area.

 

Work Commitment:

Our summer season runs from early June through mid-August, including staff training and excluding our fourth of July break. Our Overnight Camp staff work from 11 a.m. Sunday morning until 10 p.m. Friday evening every week.

Pay range: $750 a week; dependent on qualifications and experience

 

Program Specialist Qualifications:

  • Loves to interact with children and has prior experience working with children of various ages
  • Enjoys spending time outdoors and has prior experience working in an outdoor setting
  • Must be 19+ years old and possess a high school diploma or GED; for BNS Trip Specialist, strongly preferred 23+ with a valid driver’s license 
  • Willingness to work and, at times, live in an indoor and outdoor camp setting, which includes working irregular hours with limited or simple equipment, rustic facilities, wildlife and insects; limited technology while at camp, and daily exposure to sun, rain, and other weather conditions

 

Program Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Provide fun, positive, and active leadership to campers
  • Help build a supportive environment where campers can grow, make new friends, and try new things
  • Role model problem-solving, collaboration, and initiative to campers and other staff
  • Develop, supervise, and deliver facilitation of programs in an assigned specialty area with campers and staff through the use of camper planning and Girl Scout program guidelines
  • Oversee campers and staff during group activities, meals, and transitions to and from scheduled events
  • Provide quality outdoor programs that may include arts and crafts, nature study, theater, traditional and non-traditional sports, water activities, and much, much more
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures
  • Assist with management and care of program supplies and spaces, including specialty equipment
  • Assist in the care of camp equipment and in maintaining a clean camp environment
  • Maintain responsibility for the overall well-being of campers throughout their camp experience
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Program Specialty Areas: 

  • Arts & Crafts: oversee craft area, including prepping supplies for use and facilitating craft activities; ensure arts and crafts activities are age-appropriate and program-specific, and result in tangible projects for campers to take home. 

  • Outdoor Education: oversee nature center, including prepping supplies for use and facilitating outdoor education activities; ensure outdoor education activities are age-appropriate and program-specific, including instruction of Leave No Trace principles. 

  • Archery & Field Sports: oversee archery range, including facilitating archery activities; when not at the archery range, assist with facilitating Field Sports activities (i.e. volleyball, large group games, etc.). 

  • Trips (Camp Butternut Springs only): lead off-site trips, both day and overnight, including driving campers and staff in 12-passenger vans. 

  • Leadership (Camp Juniper Knoll only): oversee Counselor-in-Training and Program Aide participants, taking the lead on facilitating program experience and training.
