Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA) shapes, advances, and stewards a world-class undergraduate academic experience FOR STUDENTs at the University of Washington. Staff, faculty and students in UAA deepen and enrich the learning experience for all undergraduates, recognizing and supporting the unique learning path of each individual student and the commitment of each academic program to excellence in learning and teaching.
Within UAA, the Community Engagement and Leadership Education (CELE) unit provides students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to contribute to thriving communities. Building authentic community and campus partnerships drive our work. CELE programs are centered around the areas of community-engaged learning, democratic engagement, leadership education, pK-12 student success and place-based initiatives.
CELE has an outstanding opportunity for a Program Manager for Student Civic Leadership Development. This position has funding for one year and may be extended with additional funding.
The Program Manager for Student Civic Leadership Development leads the day-to-day implementation of our CELE Civic Fellowships, Democratic Education (Democracy Dawgs), and Husky Leadership Certificate programs. The range of tasks in this position will include: direct advising with students selected for civic fellowships/scholarships, outreach to students and campus partners regarding CIVIC LEADERSHIP and democratic education programming, work with faculty/instructors to support CIVIC LEADERSHIP programming in their classrooms, and management of online systems and web content to enable and support CIVIC LEADERSHIP learning at the University of Washington.
Under the supervision of the Director of Community Engagement, the Program Manager for Community Partnerships will have the following responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Civic leadership program management and student advising (75%)
• Oversee and manage implementation of the Husky Leadership Certificate, a capstone experience FOR STUDENTs to identify, articulate and demonstrate their leadership learning and growth during their undergraduate education. Includes management of student and mentor recruitment, training and matching; facilitating online leadership e-portfolio course; advising and communicating with student participants and mentors; coordinating student final presentations; and evaluating program outcomes.
• Manage recruitment and selection for the Ellis Civic Fellowship, John K. Buller Fellowship, Class of 1955 Scholarship, Class of 2016 Scholarship, and Washington Campus Coalition for the Public Good (WACC) Student Civic Leadership Awards. Coordinate campus outreach to potential applicants, provide application writing support, recruit and train selection committee members, manage application systems/processes, communicate with student applicants, and serve as primary point person for external communication about awards.
• Advise and support student engagement with communities through civic fellowships and scholarships via ongoing programming that facilitates reflective learning and network building; includes but is not limited to coordination of capstone experiences or other culminating projects and their public presentation.
• Coordinate with campus partners to leverage student interest in public service and/or CIVIC LEADERSHIP awards. Leverage existing networks to increase the number of students pursuing campus, regional, national, and international awards focused on civic service, social justice, and the public good.
• Facilitate General Studies 240: Critical Perspectives on Service and Leadership at least once per academic year. (Students in the CELE Civic Fellowships are required to complete this course content.)
• Project management for hourly undergraduate and/or graduate student staff; provide strategic and logistical support for hourly student staff members as they grow their skills and capacities as team members.
Student Outreach and Event Coordination (15%)
• Provide key staffing for campus student voter engagement efforts, including participation in Democracy Dawgs, a coalition of students, staff, faculty, community members, and civic leaders working to increase student voting rates and build an even stronger culture of civic and democratic engagement at the University of Washington.
• Support planning and implementation of annual Spring Celebration, an event FOR STUDENTs to articulate reflections from their community engagement and LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT experiences. This may include event logistics, student outreach and training, work with vendors, etc. Particular attention to the inclusion of Husky Leadership Certificate and Civic Fellowship cohorts in this annual event.
• Develop and regularly offer co-curricular programming, workshops and information sessions on CIVIC LEADERSHIP and democratic engagement themes.
Organizational Culture and Participation (10%)
• Serve as a thought partner and key collaborator with CELE programs
• Actively collaborate with other CELE programs to advance the goals of the Center
• Serve on CELE Center, UAA, and other campus workgroups or committees as requested.
• Take part in CELE staff meetings; participate and/or facilitate meetings in alignment with the strategic direction of UAA's community engagement and leadership education portfolio
• Play a key role in developing and maintaining an internal organization culture consistent with CELE Center values and strategic priorities.
• Other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's degree
• Three years of professional experience
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

• Aptitude for developing collaborative relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, students, and community partners.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and appropriately (through written word and public speaking) with varied stakeholders.
• Ability to take initiative in a team-based environment while simultaneously following through on independent projects.
• Creative problem solving skills, ability to balance a variety of time sensitive duties, and flexibility as priorities shift.
• Strong organizational skills, creativity, demonstrated attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and manage deadlines.
• Exhibit an appreciation of, sensitivity to, and a respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty and staff of many social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial and ethnic backgrounds.
DESIRED:
• Experience with college student leadership identity development and programming.
• Strong commitment to supporting students' socially responsible leadership learning and utilizing an equity lens in leadership education programming.
• Experience with program development and management.
