The Diversity & Inclusion office, within Michigan Housing, helps facilitate a living-learning environment that is supportive for all residents and staff; creating a welcoming, accepting, and inclusive environment for people of all social identity groups. As a core value of the institution, we frame our work in restorative practices, focusing on community engagement and creating inclusive environments where we acknowledge harm and work to repair it within the community.
Job Summary
The Program Manager, Diversity and Inclusion - Gender Inclusive and Residential Experience will work with us on the creation of inclusive communities in the residence halls and apartments by specifically leading gender-inclusive work, programming, and housing needs. Cultivating long-term relationships with residents, families, resident support systems, and campus departments to create a successful Residential Experience. Including, creating a sense of belonging and a welcoming environment from the time-specific student populations submit a housing application through their entire first year. This will include providing support and educational components for residents within these populations that experience residential climate concerns.
Responsibilities*
Residential Climate Support for Specific Student Populations (40%)
  • Support Diversity and Inclusion residential climate work, by addressing specific student population support when campus climate concerns arise.
  • Provide consultation on residential climate concerns related to specific student populations.
  • Directly mediate conflicts on sensitive topics among residents and Residential communities/floors, manage conflict resolution processes with residents, problem-solving crisis intervention options to deliver for residents, and manage crisis management processes related to identity within the residential community using restorative practices.
  • Determine educational needs based on crisis interventions and create and facilitate trainings, workshops, community circles, and roommate/resident conflicts based on those needs for both residents, student staff, and professional staff.

Management of Residential Experience (30%)
To support the Residential Experience this position will support specific student populations in their transition to the residential community, from submission of the housing application through their entire residential year. This work will support residents in feeling a sense of belonging and finding their community in the residential community. This work will include, but is not limited to:
Leadership and direction of all Gender Inclusive Living Experience programs and needs, specifically:
  • Manage the gender-inclusive living experience processes within all residential communities, including:
    • Building extensive relationships with residents, families, stakeholders, and resident support relationships in determining housing placement
    • Coordinate gender-inclusive housing assignments with the Housing Information Office in all residential communities
    • Direct support services for students in gender-inclusive management, including making decisions about system workarounds to provide access to spaces with Residence Education and Department of Public Safety and Security and Residence Education
  • Navigating all gender-inclusive needs and partnerships with M Housing and campus stakeholders, including Spectrum Center staff to provide support, resources, and programming for residents of the Gender Inclusive Living Experience (GILE) Community

Provide leadership and direction to the International Student Experience Program, specifically:
  • Manage international student support within all residential communities, including:
    • Marketing and branding to all incoming international residents in all communication pathways
    • Creating translated documents to assist residents in understanding residential processes and communication
  • Partner with the Diversity Peer Educators (DPE) and International Center staff to provide support, resources, and programming for international students
  • Determine and implement a signature program each semester for international and domestic residents about global topics and building community.

Proactive Educational Components (20%)
The Program Manager will coordinate proactive educational content, programs, training for international students, and gender-inclusive program needs.
  • Manage the M Housing You Belong Here campaign, including programming, marketing and branding components, and educational initiatives for incoming first-year students.
  • Collaborate closely with Diversity and Inclusion and campus partners on creating and implementing educational programs that complement the DEI Strategic Plan and M Housing campaign
  • Develop and facilitate training sessions, workshops, and programs that address campus climate concerns, diversity, equity, and/or inclusion in the residential communities.
  • Develop digital content about the You Belong Here campaign and educational components for programming, partnerships, websites, social media platforms, and the GooseChase app.

Departmental Administration and Assessment (10%)
  • Serve in on-call rotation to manage campus climate incidents within the residence halls, remotely by phone.
  • Assist Associate Director in daily triaging and tracking of residential climate concerns reports in the residential communities.
  • Managing campus climate crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and providing resource and referral services to students of all identities utilizing a culturally competent framework.
  • Work with the Diversity and Inclusion staff to assess the effectiveness of Diversity and Inclusion programs and social justice interventions in residential communities and how it supports the DEI campus-wide strategic plan.
  • Alongside Diversity and Inclusion staff create and coordinate programs and events sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in related fields, specifically Higher Education, Social Work, or Social Sciences
  • Experience in student affairs and/or related educational services work
  • Experience in mediation, conflict management, or restorative practices in resolving conflict
  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

Desired Qualifications*
  • Student affairs experience with emphasis on building an inclusive multicultural community
  • Experience in student supervision/advising and program leadership
  • Experience working or living in on-campus housing or community settings

Working conditions
  • The job requires working evening and weekend hours and traveling to multiple M Housing locations on campus. The position is an onsite position and shares office coverage responsibilities.
  • Possibility for one (1) day remote work a week.

Physical requirements
  • Be able to move and transport packages and boxes up to 25 lbs

Direct reports
  • Direct supervision of Gender Inclusive Housing Diversity Peer Educator and provides functional supervision of all Diversity and Inclusion student staff on addressing residential climate concerns and supporting residents.

Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2024 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY24-25 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
