Job description

This position for the TRIO Upward Bound Math Science -Wyoming, a federally funded TRIO Program focuses on college preparation for Wyoming target high school students. This position is responsible for assisting in all aspects of the program, including program design and implementation, strategic planning and assessment, participant recruitment and support, after school and summer staff supervision, budget management assistance, grant preparation assistance, and federal reporting requirements. Project offices are located on GVSU Grand Rapids campus, and the program will serve students at Wyoming target high schools. This is a grant funded position.
PRIMARY DUTIES
  • Design, implement, supervise, and monitor program activities and outcomes in accordance with federal regulations and program objectives.
  • Assist with the Upward Bound participant recruitment and selection process. Teach academic year Upward Bound senior and freshmen seminar classes in the target schools.
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct workshops, events, and college/career readiness and preparation activities.
  • Supervise after school programming, tutors, and students.
  • Monitor student academic progress.
  • Coordinate and supervise student volunteer activities.
  • Update Upward Bound website and social media; communicate with participants and families.
  • Assist leadership with budget management.
  • Execute the plan of operation per the grant’s guidelines.
  • Assist with the application and writing process of future GVSU TRIO Upward Bound Wyoming grants.
  • Maintain accurate data and documentation of all program participants and services and contribute completing the Annual Performance Report (APR) for the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Review and maintain student files and other documentation to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and federal guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships and collaborations with target schools, community partners, and GVSU campus partners; serve on committees as needed.
  • Assist with the development and supervision of the six-week summer program component at the GVSU Allendale campus as well as a week-long educational/cultural trip with program participants (overnight stay required).
  • Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.
REQUIRED KNOWLDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, health science, or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in higher education, advising, career programing, or related field.
  • Experience managing and supervising teams.
  • Experience planning and executing programming and events.
  • Experience using various social media platforms and creating outreach materials (flyers, brochures, etc.).
  • Experience working with programs for income dependent and/or first-generation students and ability to effectively advise and advocate for those students from the target population.
  • Ability to teach and manage Upward Bound classes.
  • Ability to perform outreach and recruitment efforts.
  • Ability to navigate computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Adobe Suite, and other products.
  • Strong cross-cultural, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong presentation, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Commitment to inclusion, equity, and access to higher education.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to travel; some nights and weekends may be required.
PREFERRED KNOWLDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Higher education experience.
  • Knowledge of TRIO or other higher education academic programs and support services and effective practices supporting student recruitment, retention, and development.
  • Experience using design software (such as Canva or Photoshop) to create outreach materials.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Normal office environment. Some travel and evening/weekend work is required throughout the year.
SALARY: $43,000 - $46,000; commensurate with experience.

CAMPUS: This position will work from the Grand Rapids campus.
