Job Description:
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Position Summary:
Provide individual and small group tutoring for students in the Practical Nursing Program for which hired and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning, strengthen the student's understanding of the specific learning objectives, and improve retention. This position is currently funded with the Sentara Cares grant.
Functional Responsibilities:
Tutor students in the Practical Nursing program and encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses. Meet with Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan appropriate academic support for students. Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed. Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms. Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to come in for academic support. Meet with students individually or in group sessions either through scheduled or nonscheduled appointments. Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor. Participate in professional development offerings.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Registered Nurse (RN) with unrestricted license is required.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in nursing.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to work with a diverse student population.
• Ability to adjust tutoring methods as needed to meet various learning styles.
• Ability to work well with staff, students and faculty at the professional level.
• Ability to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student's potential for academic progress.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend hours.
