This is an exciting time to work for Amarillo College! We are seeking our next Professional Tutor for Nursing who will be all-in on our mission and who will provide non-classroom, academic assistance/instruction to students on an individual or small-group basis for proactive or remedial purposes; create and present professional development for tutors and staff.
*This is a grant funded, 12 month position.
Requirements
EDUCATION
Required: Associate’s Degree
Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree
EXPERIENCE
Required: One (1) year of clinical practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) or other licensed and/or certified health professional.
Preferred: Experience teaching or tutoring individuals or groups, working in a higher education setting, experience working with at-risk students with disabilities.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
Required: Unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse or unencumbered license and/or certification in a health discipline in the State of Texas.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in tutor training and required training provided by the college.
- Attend nursing classes utilizing the concept-based curriculum.
- Implement effective study and test-taking strategies.
- Utilize own professional practice experiences to help students apply and understand content and concepts within the nursing curriculum.
- Provide one-on-one or small groups tutoring to students.
- Research, create and deliver training on best practices and effective tutoring strategies within a concept-based nursing curriculum.
- Communicate students’ progress to the SSS Project Director and Advisor, the Academic Success Center Coordinator, Instructors, and Success Coaches.
- Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
- Provide students with learning strategies such as study skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking strategies.
- Organize the tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of tutoring.
- Ability to work well with a team or independently.
- Creativity in developing lessons and materials for remediation and professional training modules.
- Excellent presentation and communication skills.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
- Ability to use specialized technology, use of Colleague software.
- Ability to demonstrate friendliness, courtesy, effective communication and professionalism at all times.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records and progress at all times.

Salary: Amarillo College - Salary Schedules (actx.edu), Pay grade 10 (salary is determined by Human Resources based on education, work experience and internal comparisons).
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to travel between offices and buildings, and requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and/or maneuver office supplies as needed.
Working Conditions: Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, and varying events if necessary.)
Work Environment: This position operates in a professional office environment, routinely uses standard office equipment (i.e. computers, phones, copy and fax machines, filing cabinets) and is in a high traffic area with continual interruptions. Software commonly used includes Microsoft Office Suite, Colleague, and various other educational applications. Work may also be performed outside of the office and with little to no supervision.
