UPMC St. Margaret Hospital is a 3 Time Magnet ANCC Designated Hospital, we are a 250-bed teaching hospital situated on a 21-acre campus near Aspinwall, PA. We are looking to hire a Full-Time Medical/Surgical – Stepdown Resource PoolProfessional Staff Nurse.

This position will complete orientation and rotate primarily on the following units: 4A, 3B, 5A, 5B, 6B, ICU, ED and nursing support services.

Requirements include all of Resource Pool RN requirements, BAC and ACLS.
4A – Our 4A Nursing Unit is a 28 bed, private room, acute rehabilitation unit. The unit provides comprehensive rehabilitation services to adult and geriatric patients ages 18 and over
3B – 3B Stepdown is an acuity adaptable, fast paced 34 bed telemetry Step Down unit that serves the needs of critically ill patients from admission through discharge. The patient population is medical patients who require a higher level of cardiac monitoring than can be achieved with flex monitoring on a Medical Surgical floor, but who do not require the ICU care.
5A – The 5A Nursing Unit is a 34-bed medical/surgical unit with neurological and oncology subspecialties. The services provided on the 5A Nursing Unit include all medical/surgical needs within our realm of practice specializing in stroke, cancer and palliative/hospice care
5B- 5B is a 33 bed, private room, Medical Surgical unit, the unit provides medical-surgical care to adult and geriatric patients ages 18 and over. A full range of general adult medical diagnoses admitted to the unit include, but are not limited to, the following: CHF, COPD, Peritoneal Dialysis.
6B – 6B is a 34-bed medical/surgical unit that provides care to adult and geriatric patients with a focus on pre and post-surgical patients. We also have stepdown beds available on this unit. We provide care to a full range of general adult medical diagnoses, but our primary specialties are general surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, ENT, GYN, urologic surgery, and plastic surgery
While rotating through each of these units you will also be able to learn skills from some of our other units in the hospital. Wound Care, PT/OT, IV Team, Care Management, Respiratory.


ICU- The Intensive Care Unit is a 7-bed Medical-Surgical ICU that cares for the critically ill. nursing care is provided to patients who are critically ill, cardiac compromised, or clinically unstable. The services provided encompass all medical and surgical needs of critically ill patients including but not limited to hemodynamic and cardiac monitoring, continuous renal replacement therapy, and patients requiring specialized medications.

ED- UPMC St. Margaret is a 24 hour- 7 day a week community Emergency Department. The unit has 26 beds, along with an 8-bed holding area. SMH is a certified (AHA) primary stroke center and specializes in orthopedics. The average nurse to patient ratio is 4:1. The ED sees a variety of medical emergencies, including chest pain, shortness of breath, stroke symptoms, orthopedic emergencies, abdominal pain, and minor trauma. Our scope of service includes patients of all ages.

Support Services: This includes any role that may support the Nursing need at UPMC St. Margaret including but not limited to Team nursing assignment. Resource Pool Nurses will be utilized to open flex and surge areas at times of high census.

The Professional Staff Nurse provides highly competent patient care and treatment while demonstrating empathy and a passion for learning. A role that requires independent judgment, fluent communication, and candid partnership, the Staff Nurse establishes relationships with physicians, other care providers, patients, and patients’ families to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care.
As a Professional Staff Nurse and a member of the care delivery team, you will set the standards for the level and quality of nursing care and possess authority and accountability for its provision. At all times, you will exemplify a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.
Shift/Hours: Our RNs work a rotating 12-hour schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor.

Responsibilities:

Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patients that involves the patient as a partner and considers the individual needs of the patient in a holistic manner.

Demonstrates critical thinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care. Practices solid communication skills, and can articulate and translate the patient’s condition to other care providers and negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices.

Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers. Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system’s goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction. Creates a caring and compassionate patient-focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.

Demonstrates accountability for professional development that improves the quality of professional practice and the quality of patient care. Actively participates in unit-based shared governance, goal setting and supports the change and transition process to improve quality of care and the practice environment. Serves as a highly engaged and full partner on the care team and responds willingly to care team member needs for assistance and partnership. Participates in work that improves patient care and the professional practice environment. Adapts to change and demonstrates flexibility with the change process.

Actively participates in department or unit-specific quality improvement efforts. Identifies opportunities for quality improvement to colleagues and management. Takes personal responsibility in improving patient satisfaction with the quality of care and service. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care: identifies research issues or articles related to clinical specialty or areas of interest, discusses opportunities for quality improvement at multidisciplinary rounds, and influences patients’ plans of care.

Qualifications:

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
  • Minimum 1 year experience.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
UPMC approved national certification preferred. Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
ACLS required within 1 year transfer/hire into department.
Registered Nurse (RN)
Act 33 with renewal
Act 34 with renewal
Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
