Position Summary:

The primary location of this position is the main Cullowhee, NC campus. This position has an 11-months per year appointment period.
The Registered Nurse is responsible for implementation of the nursing process in the Health Services clinic. Duties include, but are not limited to: administration of injections, including vaccines and allergy serums, in addition to therapeutic medications. The RN also assists with nurse visits which are brief visits conducted by the RN as an addition to the medical provider, working under set standards and protocols as determined by the medical director. The RN also is responsible for conducting the triage process, including assessment and prioritization of patient appointments for respiratory clinic or same day services. On occasion the RN may partner with a provider to assist with patient visits, performing assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and patient education, screening patients during intake and assessment, document chief complaint, obtain vital signs to include height and weight; administer medications according to Health Services protocol; The RN may also be called upon to assist with procedures per provider request.. Provide through and correct patient documentation in an electronic health record.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position:

The RN utilizes nursing skills and process when providing care for patients in university health services. The RN assesses patients; plans appropriate nursing care based on assessment findings; implements appropriate nursing care including, but not limited to, standing orders and protocols adopted by University Health Services, provider orders and appropriate patient education; evaluates outcomes based on patient response. The RN completes patient referrals and pre-certification for insurance purposes as necessary. The RN maintains patient appointments on schedule by providing timely service to waiting patients and helping to ensure that providers have appropriate assistance to stay on schedule. The RN receives reports from outside facilities for procedures performed and informs appropriate provider; as well as accurately and succinctly documents nursing care on patients’ electronic medical record in accordance with Health Services guidelines. This position also ensures that exam rooms are adequately stocked with necessary supplies and equipment and ascertains that equipment is in proper working order; follows Health Services guidelines regarding narcotic inventory; follows North Carolina Immunization Branch guidelines for vaccine storage and inventory. The RN also obtains North Carolina State Board of Nursing mandated hours of continuing education in the area of Ambulatory Care Nursing practice and/or related areas of practice; adheres to HIPAA and OSHA guidelines; and maintains Healthcare Provider BLS certification

License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
