Professional Dog Trainer

This is a very part-time job for a highly experienced individual who is very passionate about training dogs with positive reinforcement.

At Bozeman Dog Company, we love dogs and we believe they make their owners’ lives better. That’s why we’re looking for a special individual who’s highly passionate about, and with extensive experience in, positive reinforcement training for dogs. As a Dog Trainer at Bozeman Dog Co you will be responsible for teaching obedience classes, behavior modification programs, and possibly private sessions. We have an outstanding trainer however she is solely doing private sessions now; this position is primarily for group sessions in the store.

Bozeman Dog Co has a very nice, dedicated training space 30’ x 22’. We do extensive marketing for the training classes and the store offers everything training clients may need for their dogs’ health and happiness.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and people skills, a strong work ethic, and rock-solid integrity. S/he must also be able to handle dogs of all sizes and temperaments.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Train dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments in obedience, manners, and tricks
• Work with dog owners to teach them how to train their own pets
• Keep up to date on the latest dog training methods and techniques
• Maintain records of each dog’s progress
• Develop and implement individualized training programs for each dog
• Teach group classes and possibly private lessons
• Evaluate a dog’s temperament and behavior to determine the best training approach
• Socialize puppies and young dogs
• Teach new owners how to care for their pets properly, including feeding, grooming, and administering medications as needed
• Perform basic training tasks such as teaching basic commands, obedience, and behavior modification techniques
• Observe dog owners during training sessions to provide feedback and help owners improve their technique
• Provide behavioral counseling services to owners whose dogs exhibit undesirable behaviors such as aggression towards people or other animals
• Develop a training program based on the owner’s needs and goals for their pet

Required Skills and Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Proven experience as a Dog Trainer
• Excellent communication, customer service, and time-management skills
• Ability to effectively work independently as well as with clients and co-workers
• Patience and physical stamina for working with dogs of all temperaments
• Ability to quickly pick up on and understand dog psychology, reactions and responses and how to positively modify behaviors

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in animal science, veterinary technology, or related field
• Certification from an accredited organization, such as the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers
• Multiple years of experience training dogs of all breeds and temperaments
• Experience with obedience, agility, and other specialized training programs
• Strong understanding of canine behavior and psychology

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $21.00 - $26.00 per hour

Expected hours: 2 – 20 per week
