Job description

Position Summary

The Product Development Scientist is responsible for developing products that meet the requirements of the customer(s) request while ensuring all safety and quality requirements are met, and work with the Product Development team on strategic initiatives to expand Formulife’s supplement product line. The Product Development Scientist will have KPI’s in all stages that is including but not limited to the process for specified projects spanning, innovation, flavor, collaborating with customers, vendors and internal departments, cost optimization, and commercialization.


In the absence of the Product Development Scientist, the Product Development Tech, Assistant or R&D Manager, will oversee the daily duties and responsibilities regarding operation workflow and adherence of the SOPs and cGMPs.


Employee Responsibilities

  • Adhere to cGMP and SOPs.
  • Report any situations that might have a negative effect on food safety or quality immediately to supervisor or QA Department.
  • Ensure food safety and quality are maintained according to company standards.
  • Comply with policies and procedures to prepare and pack products under sanitary conditions that do not expose it to the risk of contamination.
  • Operate and maintain a clean and hygienic standard of operation. Follow Company cGMP’s (Current Good Manufacturing Practices and Food Safety Policies at all times)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • To develop prototype samples, plans for scale up batches for stability test, prepares product samples for stability test, stores and records samples in laboratory.
  • Assures that materials used, and materials manufactured meet written specifications for physical and chemical attributes necessary for product manufacture
  • Performs raw material evaluations, documents all data collected during testing and evaluates same for completeness and correctness
  • Performs and/or assists in various phases of R&D and Product Development activities. Processes lab batches and scale up batches using scales, blenders, tablet presses, encapsulator, coaters, granulators, mills, rollers, compactors, etc.
  • Maintain branded ingredient and raw material database
  • Research potential ingredients based on physical properties such as solubility for particular form factors.
  • Forge relationships with key suppliers, and purchasing team to keep abreast of upcoming trends, to solicit and secure opportunities for new food ideas, technologies, ingredients, and packaging materials.
  • Lead product tastings, evaluations, etc., and analyze/record results in a statistical/analytical manner.
  • Test new products for flavor, texture, color, nutritional content, and adherence to government and industry standards.
  • Stay up to date on new regulations and current events regarding food science by reviewing scientific literature.
  • Study the structure and composition of raw ingredients or the changes raw ingredients undergo in storage and processing.
  • Develop new food items for production, based on consumer feedback.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate records of lab work, documentation of ingredients, and provide statistical evaluations and reports


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Food safety standards and regulations.
  • Knowledge of cGMPs
  • Ability to manage processes and procedures.
  • Ability to manage team members effectively.
  • Ability to work in an environment with inside/outside extreme temperatures and in noisy environments.

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree S. in Chemical engineering, Pharmaceutical sciences, Nutraceutical sciences, Nutrition, Food Engineering, Food Technology, Food Science, or similar is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS: If you apply for this position, you must be eligible to work in the U.S. without need for an employer sponsored visa (work permit).


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is sedentary, requiring extended period of sitting or standing to perform the work. There may be some infrequent movement from area-to-area to transport items weighing no more than 20 pounds.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the primary duties of the job, the employee is regularly exposed to various outdoor and indoor environments (i.e. general office, industrial complexes, food processing plants, semiconductor labs, clean rooms, etc., some of which can be hazardous). Temperature variances, high noise levels, and dusty environments may be encountered.
