We are currently hiring a Product Development Laboratory Technician in Boston, MA.
A Product Development Technician is responsible for executing the functions of the Product Development Lab as laid out by Laboratory Operations Managers. This will primarily consist of:
- Blending and processing prototypes within the Boston Beer portfolio of products
- Coordinating the shipping and receiving of samples for internal and external stakeholders
- Laboratory Upkeep and Maintenance
- Inventory Auditing and Maintenance
Technicians are also responsible for maintaining a safe, clean and efficient laboratory environment and must understand how to safely operate all equipment within the lab spaces. This includes analytical, blending, processing and safety equipment. Technicians are expected to communicate effectively with their colleagues via e-mail, instant messaging and in-person as well as attend regularly scheduled meetings both onsite and virtually.
What You'll Brew:
- Understands and operates all equipment utilized in the lab to create sample prototypes
- Including all analytical, processing, blending and safety equipment
- Completes Product Development Work Requests in tandem with fellow Technicians and Technologists as directed by Site Leaders and Lab Managers
- Communicates capacity availability and constraints clearly to the Site Leaders in order for assignments to be completed on time and within the requested parameters
- Supports and completes the shipping of prototype samples for both internal and external stakeholders
- Understands and operates FedEx, UPS and other shipping portals online
- Works with brewing teams to operate equipment for blending and processing of samples
- Has a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
- Understands Boston Beer’s internal formula tracking system and works with Product Design colleagues to execute blends using that system
- Completes lab related projects outside of standard Work Request process as assigned by managers
- Ingredient inventory auditing and maintenance
- Cleaning and maintaining lab surfaces and equipment
- Equipment calibration and daily lab start-up and shut down functions
- There is frequent exposure production environments:
- Subject to loud and constant noise
- Non-environmentally conditioned spaces which may lead to extreme hot and cold
- Operating environment is complex and densely populated with production equipment and forklifts that necessitates high situational awareness
- Work overtime as needed which may require 12-hour days, weekends, and holidays

Minimum Requirements
- Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in a Life Science field or Food Science Degree
- 1+ years life science laboratory experience (college experience acceptable)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and high attention to detail
- Proven ability to work in a flexible and changing work environment
Physical Requirements:
- All production roles are required to pass a pre-employment physical exam to comply with their
specific role requirement(s) - Ability to lift up to 50lbs, sometimes repeatedly
- Regular walking and standing for long periods of time on concrete, metal and grated surfaces
- Responsibilities may require crouching, stepping over, crawling under, bending, twisting, climbing and reaching above head and shoulders repeatedly throughout the day
- Responsibilities may require climbing flights of stairs, working from heights or on elevated platforms
- Ability to wear assigned PPE (safety shoes, gloves, facemask, hearing protection and hard hat)
- Established dexterity so you can handle materials, operate equipment and interface with computer systems with precision
- Some roles (e.g., forklift operator) may be required to sit for a prolonged period of time and have strong peripheral vision and depth perception
Level: 9
In accordance with pay transparency laws the pay rate for this role if hired is $19.62 - $42.50 per hour.
