Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of the University Archives, the Processing Archivist will arrange and describe special and archival research collections, university records, and personal papers, focusing on materials that share the stories and contributions of historically marginalized groups in the Indiana University Libraries collections. These collections span several units across the Libraries, notably Area Studies and University Archives. While the incumbent will work under the general direction of the Director of the University Archives, they will collaborate and consult with colleagues in departments that connect with the collections. The priority for the incumbent in this position will be to complete the processing of the Indiana University Libraries African Studies Collection’s’ Liberian Collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Arrange and describe Indiana University’s special and archival collections
To include implementing reparative descriptive practices and ensuring marginalized voices are not silenced
To include working with the Archives Digital Archivist to process and describe born-digital records and papers within collections
  • Develop a methodology to surface the stories of marginalized peoples found within collections
  • Under the general guidance of the Director of University Archives, support outreach activities that center stories and representation of marginalized voices
  • Identify materials that are candidates for digitization and liaise with colleagues to support digitization efforts
  • Supervise student workers and interns
  • Promote the IU Libraries culture of diversity and inclusion and support the values outlined in the IU Bloomington Libraries Diversity Strategic Plan

Basic Qualifications
Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science; candidates with an advanced degree in a relevant subject and appropriate experience in an academic setting will also be considered
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience arranging and describing archival collections in a special collections library or archive.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival appraisal, arrangement, and description
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including working effectively with staff across departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with ArchivesSpace.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position at the IU Libraries (https://libraries.indiana.edu/bloomington-library-faculty#panel-about).
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse workplace and building an inclusive workforce.
