Job description

Kings County Child Support Services is seeking to fill the position of Process Server. Under general supervision, the successful candidate will serve subpoenas, complaints, summons and other civil or criminal processes and will perform related duties as required.
Incumbents in the Process Server classification are responsible for serving criminal and/or civil subpoenas and related documents or child support documents, depending on the department assignment. At Child Support Services, incumbents report to a Program Manager or designee. In the District Attorney’s Office, incumbents report to the Chief District Attorney Investigator. In addition to Process Server duties in the District Attorney’s Office, incumbents may assist investigative staff in general or routine investigative tasks as assigned.

DUTY SAMPLE

Duties include but are not limited to those described below. Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the County to be appropriate under applicable law.
Depending on department assignment, serves subpoenas, complaints, summons and other civil or criminal processes to individuals, agencies and private establishments; determines location of persons, agencies and businesses from available sources; within the scope of assigned responsibility, explains purpose of documents and follow-up required to parties served; keeps records of subpoenas served and makes necessary reports; acts independently in locating witnesses and serves subpoenas for appearance in court; interviews employers, families, neighbors and others to obtain information regarding the whereabouts of witnesses; obtains and distributes crime reports and other documents from law enforcement agencies; obtains information and data via law enforcement computerized systems such as CLETS and DMV; testifies in court as to the service of subpoenas, measures taken to locate witnesses, and gives evidence when witnesses have failed to appear in court; remains available during court sessions; transports departmental materials and documents; may transport witnesses to and from court and the appropriate department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS **Minimum requirements must be met by the closing date**

Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience: Six months of experience serving legal documents, process serving or skip-tracing.
Desirable Qualifications: Paralegal or repossession experience preferred.
License: Possession of a valid California driver's license at the time of appointment.
Special Requirements: 1) Work irregular hours including evenings and weekends; 2) Travel frequently in-county and outside the County as necessary; 3) Qualify for security clearance through a comprehensive background investigation, including fingerprint check; and 3) Certain positions in this classification may be designated as bilingual, requiring fluency in a foreign language.
