Amgen is currently seeking a dedicated Process Development Senior Scientist to join our High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE) & Automation group in Drug Substance Technologies – Synthetics (DSTS) at Thousand Oaks, CA. Amgen’s DSTS group within Process Development (PD) organization is responsible for the invention and development of drug substance manufacturing processes and technologies to advance Amgen's exciting portfolio of synthetic and hybrid assets. Process chemists/chemical engineers within the HTE & Automation group support high throughput screening activities, including polymorph screening, salt screening, solubility measurements and solid-state characterization, and assist drug substance teams with the development of robust crystallization processes. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and team-oriented individual with a strong background in chemical engineering and/or chemistry with a consistent track record of scientific innovation and achievement.
Scientific/Technical Responsibilities
Design and perform high-throughput polymorph screening, salt screening, solubility measurements and solid-state characterization of drug substance intermediates.
Develop crystallization processes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and drug substance intermediates that optimize quality, physical properties, morphology and particle size distribution.
Support cGMP manufacturing and technology transfer to our internal manufacturing facilities and external contract manufacturers.
Advance digital and automation technology to support high-throughput workflows and enhanced crystallization development.
Serve as a technical expert and keep current in the field of solid form science and crystallization engineering.
Actively contribute to drug substance development teams by providing project updates, data interpretation, and technical recommendations.
Maintain good laboratory documentation practices and compliance with electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) guidelines.
Work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team of chemists, engineers and attribute scientists.
Work independently in advancing projects and studies within required deadlines.

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree PhD OR PharmD OR MD in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry completed by June 2024
Or
Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry and 3 years of industry experience
Or
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry and 5 years of industry experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D in chemical engineering with a specialization in solid form science and/or crystallization engineering
Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research
Experience in solid‐state techniques (DSC, TGA, XRD, PLM, DVS, particle characterization, Raman, IR, etc.)
Experience with automation systems (e.g., Unchained Labs, Chemspeed, Chronect, etc.) and data visualization software (e.g., Spotfire)
Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) and the ability to work well in teams
