SUMMARY:
Want to be a part of the team that is taking Fibrex to the next level? Andersen is looking for an experienced Process Development engineer to join our exciting and rewarding thermoplastic composites and Process Development research and development team! Be a core member of the team that develops and evaluates new or existing thermoplastic materials and thermoplastic process technologies for Andersen’s extensive portfolio of products. In this position, you would be responsible to lead and support research and development efforts involving thermoplastic extrusion processes. Projects may involve enhancing existing materials and processes, improving quality, reducing cost, reducing waste, stabilizing processes, and/or investigating, developing, and commercializing new processing technologies. A large component of this role is to apply the scientific method to assess and build confidence in feasible technical solutions.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as a Process Development engineer in the Thermoplastics and Extrusion Development (TED) group with a focus on thermoplastic extrusion (e.g., Fibrex) and related processes around blending and compounding
- Lead the investigation, evaluation, and execution of technology development (i.e., material, process, or equipment) or improvement projects via a stage-gate project management process
- Lead complex & ambiguous development projects with cross-functional integration.
- Lead and manage innovation projects while driving progress regardless of ambiguity
- Collaborate cross functionally to help create scope, scale, and strategy of ambiguous innovation & process improvement projects
- Gain alignment with leadership on project plans, success criteria, and budget
- Create and execute test plans and test reports
- Use a science-based approach and tools to solve complex technical problems with practical solutions (i.e., Design of Experiments, process mapping, process capability analysis, Pugh matrix, FMEA, MSA, control plans, etc.)
- Be or become a SME and be proficient in methodologies for the evaluation of extrusion processes and material performance
- Proficiently run lab to full-scale equipment, such as a blender, compounders, and extruders
- Work independently and collaboratively on most aspects of work, only requiring general direction with occasional work review
- Stay abreast of industry technology developments and explore their use in Andersen processes and products
- Collaborate with operations (blending, compounding and extrusion) and other technology teams (sealants, adhesives, glass, wood, non-reinforced thermoplastics)
- Effectively communicate at all levels of internal and external customers
- Travel as needed within the USA. Up to 10% travel.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
MUST HAVE QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.S. Materials Science, Mechanical, Chemical, or similar Engineering degree with of 5+ years’ experience preferred
- Positive collaborative attitude with excellent relationship building skills
- Cross-functional project management experience with preference to product and/or material and/or Process Development experience
- Self-motivated with a demonstrated track record of scientific and data-based problem-solving skills
- Self-motivated with a strong technical curiosity and ability to handle ambiguity
- Self-motivated with a strong technical curiosity and ability to handle ambiguity and the fuzzy front end of innovation projects
- Excellent oral and written technical communication skills
- Demonstrates strong scientific and data-based approaches to problem solving
NICE-TO-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in thermoplastic processes (compounding, extrusion, blending)
- Process development design of experiments experience
- Proficiency in statistical analysis along with statistical software experience
- Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to be hands on
- Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills

In 2024, Andersen has set a profit-sharing target of $4,000 per eligible employee, prorated as appropriate. Profit sharing will be paid out in quarterly installments to provide eligible employees with payments throughout the year, with payment amounts tied to quarterly operating profit performance.
