Job Overview

Performs basic technical procedures in the Histology laboratory. Routine tasks include specimen embedding, sectioning, including frozen sections and staining as well as basic assistance in the gross room; accessioning, cassette labeling, and specimen triage, and basic Immunohistochemistry and In-situ hybridization.

Qualifications

EDUCATION - Associate degree
EXPERIENCE - Minimum of three years of experience using basic histology skills, embedding, sectioning and staining. Advance knowledge of human anatomy, cellular structure and function. Advance laboratory technical skills, including ability to troubleshoot. QC work and advanced reagent preparation. Operation and maintenance of general laboratory equipment; analytical balance, pH meter, tissue processor, embedding center and microtome.
EQUIVALENCY- Meeting one of the other requirements set by the ASCP Board of Certification may be accepted in lieu of degree.

  • No direct patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Performs the standards of basic histology, which includes all surgical, bone marrow, cytology, autopsy and consultation, requests according to the guidelines established by accrediting agencies.
  • Performs routine special stains according to the established procedures and histology standards .
  • Performs Immunohistochemical and In-situ hybridization stains using technical understanding of procedures.
  • Follows QC procedures for all equipment and tests and maintains adequate or appropriate inventory of supplies.
  • Completes cross training and special projects as assigned.
  • Meets required production times to ensure timely patient testing.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $53,981.27 to $80,971.91
Hourly Salary Range: $25.95 to $38.93
