Job description

The Bone Densitometry (Dexa) Technologist is responsible for measuring patients' bone mass to determine bone health. The Dexa Technologist ensures the equipment is operating properly, utilizes appropriate safety procedures, positions patients, follows physicians' orders to complete scans, and records and reports results.
Education/License Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Certified Bone Densitometry Technologist or ARRT(R) Registry

Essential Functions:
  • Performs Dexa procedures on patients following department protocol and ensuring that every scan is accurate to the best of the Tech's ability.
  • Keeps up with all new updates and new information in Dexa (Bone Density) and informs all other Dexa Techs.
  • Stays up to date with the latest technology and can maintain and teach other techs.
  • Delivers Dexa cases to the designated Radiologists and evenly separates them for interpretation. Ensures that the cases are evenly distributed between the number of Radiologists reading B.D.
  • Follows daily archiving and weekly database procedures according to Department protocol.
  • Responsible for ensuring Dexa room is stocked with the necessary supplies-responsible for letting the Supervisor know when supplies are low.
  • Contacts Doctors' offices or Nursing floors regarding patients that are scheduled for Dexa when a question arises.
  • Keeps the Dexa room in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Responsible for completing all education requirements before the designated deadline. This is done on an annual basis.
  • Follows departmental guidelines for utilizing good body mechanics when transferring patients onto and off the Dexa table, and for observing all standard isolation protocol and procedures.

Skill Requirements:
  • Responsible for knowing and understanding all aspects of Bone Densitometry (Dexa) (i.e., positioning, QC, archiving, database, etc.)
  • Knowledgeable about pre-certs for insurances covering Dexa and obtaining the proper information from the nursing floors or nursing homes regarding patients' needs for obtaining a Bone Density scan (i.e., mode of transportation, condition of patient, etc.).
