Our focus is on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering a trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide and we are looking for passionate, high energy engineers to help achieve that mission. As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and HW infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.
We are looking for a Principal Thermal/Mechanical Engineer to join the team.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the thermal design and analysis of cloud hardware components, including servers, racks, power distribution systems, and cooling systems.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and system architects, to develop and implement thermal solutions that meet performance and reliability requirements.
  • Conduct thermal simulations, modeling, and analysis to assess system-level thermal performance and optimize cooling strategies.
  • Define and establish thermal design guidelines, specifications, and test plans for cloud hardware products.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate cooling technologies, such as liquid cooling, air cooling, and heat sinks, to ensure efficient heat dissipation and thermal management.
  • Perform root cause analysis and troubleshooting of thermal issues during hardware development and deployment.
  • Lead thermal validation and testing activities, including thermal chamber testing, thermal cycling, and thermal characterization.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies related to thermal management in cloud hardware development.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other thermal engineers, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to assess thermal performance of off-the-shelf components and develop customized solutions as necessary.
  • Lead Mechanical Design: Take ownership of mechanical design projects from concept to completion, leading a team of engineers to develop innovative solutions for cloud-based hardware infrastructure.
  • System Architecture: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers and software developers, to define system architecture and develop mechanical specifications based on functional requirements.
  • Design and Prototyping: Design mechanical components, systems, and assemblies using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software and create prototypes for testing and validation.
  • Performance Optimization: Conduct analysis, simulations, and tests to optimize mechanical system performance, reliability, and thermal management, ensuring efficient operation and meeting industry standards.
  • Design Review and Documentation: Conduct design reviews, generate engineering documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and reports, and ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems, provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers, and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Vendor Management: Collaborate with external vendors and suppliers to source components, review manufacturing processes, and ensure adherence to quality standards.
  • Emerging Technologies: Stay abreast of the latest trends, advancements, and best practices in mechanical engineering, cloud infrastructure, and data center technologies, and propose innovative ideas to enhance our hardware offerings
