The City of Phoenix Water Services Department (WSD), one of the nation's largest potable water utilities, treats and delivers safe, reliable drinking water to 1.5 million customers across approximately 540 square miles. Phoenix Water Services also manages the sewer collection system and treats wastewater for 2.5 million residents in metropolitan Phoenix.
The Water Services Department is seeking a Principal Engineering Technician. This position performs technical civil engineering work of average difficulty, and the work is performed under the general supervision of a professional engineer who makes assignments and reviews finished work for compliance with standards and schedules.
This position requires:
- Communicating orally with other employees, plan holders, and the public by telephone and in a one-to-one, face-to-face setting.
- Reading and interpreting water and right-of-way quarter-section maps, engineering drawings, and specifications for construction control purposes.
- Researching records and files for accurate information regarding construction drawings.
- Reviewing and checking the design specifications and shop drawings of both City and other municipality projects to ensure conformance to standards.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Knowledge of principles of managing, operating, and maintaining water distribution, water treatment, wastewater treatment, wastewater collection systems, facilities, and infrastructure
- Knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering and inspection standards for distribution pipeline installation in the right of way, including city plumbing codes, MAG standards, and City supplements.
- Ability to extract and manipulate data, create spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. Knowledge of utility asset management principles and practices.
SALARY
Pay Range: $61,526.40 - $110,510.40 annually.
Hiring Range: $61,526.40 - $95,451.20 annually.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Six years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work, including three years of paraprofessional civil engineering experience (or one year of experience at the level of Chief Engineering Technician, or Chief Drafting Technician).
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- A minimum of 3 years of water and wastewater plan review design, construction, inspection, and operation experience.
- Review or design experience in grading and drainage.
- Experience or training in performing civil plan reviews.
- Experience with City Code and Zoning guidelines.
