The Northrop Grumman Employee Communications team seeks a savvy and strategic Principal Communications Representative who is confident in being a strategic advisor, has an innovative spirit, thinks outside the “let’s send an e-mail” box, thrives on the challenge of telling compelling stories, and constantly seeks to improve communications practices through disciplined measurement, analysis and adjustment.
This position reports to the Employee Communications Manager for Northrop Grumman’s Mission Systems sector, and is located in Linthicum, Md. This is a hybrid position.
In this job, you’ll:
- Support our efforts to inform and inspire employees and drive business priorities within the Mission Systems sector.
- Own and maintain the Mission Systems Employee Communicationsintegrated editorial calendar. You’ll help our extended team track milestones, tactics and communications plans, and will maintain our editorial calendar across channels (newsletters, intranet, digital signage, etc.). Observing data over time, you’ll recommend timely tactics for communication plans, helping teammates understand which channels will get them the most impact for their goals.
- Proactively pitch and write stories aligned to strategic priorities and metrics-informed analysis. You keep an eye on timely topics and what’s getting high click through rates to proactively generate content employees will love to click. You’ll own story and content creation start-to-finish, generating creative content throughout the year. This content may be placed in our digital or print employee publications, our newsletters, our intranet, etc.
- Lead the Mission Systems Employee Communicationsmetrics practice. You’ll keep tabs on all of our channels, consistently reporting on what is working and what isn’t across channels. You’ll use these observations to recommend how we can communicate differently, sharing your learnings across the full Mission Systems (and Northrop Grumman) communications teams.
- Chief PoliteMail user and advocate in Mission Systems. You’ll be our lead for this tool within Mission Systems, using the tool each week and learning how to get the most compelling and actionable data possible. You may also be called on to help others interpret their data. You’ll regularly review this data to find insights and learnings that the full team can use.
- Own the strategy and editorial calendar for the Mission Systems intranet and digital signage. You’ll work with our SharePoint administrator to enact changes aligned to your strategy. You’ll be responsible for regularly auditing the content, appearance and performance of pages to recommend changes that drive improved results.
- Own Mission Systems-wide newsletters, including our all-employee newsletter and our leader newsletter. You’ll own the editorial calendars for each, incorporating enterprise-wide syndicated content and providing Mission Systems content to keep our employees engaged. You’re someone who is not content with the status quo, consistently making data-driven recommendations on how we can improve our click rate, make our newsletters more readable / engaging or reduce our bounce rate.
- Be a storyteller – conceptualize, find and produce a diverse array of inspirational content that supports our business goals and communications objectives.
- Collect and analyze data, make recommendations to improve our approach and the results of future communications, events and activities.
- Ensure all communications strategies and tactics are consistent with the company’s strategic vision and reflect the Northrop Grumman brand.
You’ll be a great fit if you:
- Are a strategic, self-motivated, collaborative communicator who thrives in fast-paced environments and can juggle multiple projects simultaneously, reprioritize quickly and meet deadlines.
- Are an internal marketing thinker – capturing employee attention can be challenging, but you think creatively and strategically to recommend which tactics will yield the highest impact. You consistently ask how we can get more impact from each tactic, questioning the status quo and pulling in best practices to deliver engaging content to employees.
- Have proven experience in multiple areas across communications disciplines that you'll use to create compelling and effective content and engagement methods.
- Are poised, approachable and confident in being a strategic advisor to business partners and senior leaders – tailoring your recommendations in response to business goals, communications objectives and measured outcomes.
- Are a strong writer, have excellent editing skills and are passionate about telling inspirational stories via articles, interviews, Q&As, brief/catchy lists, infographics, videos, animations, and photo/caption features. Ideally, you’ll bring some new ideas and formats we haven’t tried or thought of yet.
- Are disciplined in using data to measure the impact of communications plans and tactics, and consistent in identifying trends and recommendations from data.
- Have a track record of developing and implementing successful communications campaigns.
- Are collaborative and can gain consensus among stakeholders with disparate views.
- Are a stellar project manager who lives by prioritization and possesses a borderline-annoying attention to detail.
- Have great presentation and facilitation skills and can convey vision and approach to others.
- Are willing to challenge the status quo to propose and pilot new, creative solutions, tools and technologies.
