About This Role:
Veranex has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Principal Design Researcher. You will be part of a team working to improve lives globally through medical technology innovation. The Principal Design Researcher leads generative and evaluative research projects across a spectrum of disease states and medical device challenges. You'll work collaboratively with our clients and team to discover the user needs, use environments, and workflow pain points to ultimately inform the strategic solution opportunities, system requirements, and/or design recommendations.
What You Will Do:

  • Leads project team members through the development and delivery of all aspects of project work.
  • Serves as the voice of the user/stakeholder throughout the development process.
  • Applies human centered design practices to digital solutions, physical products, and healthcare services.
  • Builds organizational empathy and awareness of the user/stakeholder needs and experience through the use of human-centered storytelling, visually mapping workflows, and unearthing meaningful insights.
  • Leads research and strategy projects by devising the methodologies used, facilitating the research activities, and driving towards deliverables that provide innovative insights to support client business strategies.
  • Acts as the pivot point between the client's project and strategic needs and the internal team to create approaches, distribute tasks and ensure team alignment in working towards deliverables.
  • Leads client communications on all aspects of a project including informal client meetings, collaborative work sessions, and formal presentations.
  • Engages with clients to understand priorities and strategically balances those with the priorities and needs of the end customer.
  • Collaborates closely with a multi-disciplinary team of designers, engineers, and human factors practitioners throughout the development process to define solutions that respond to priority user needs.
  • Contributes to the generation of project proposals
  • Provides leadership, training, guidance, and support to design research staff.
  • Serves as a trusted internal SME/thought leader on aspects of Veranex's Research & Strategy process/methods and insights.
  • Monitors budget and schedule against selected research approaches to give PM team an educated and live view on project health

Qualifications
Required skills:
  • Experience working as a consultant
  • Experience in healthcare design, preferably medical device
  • Bachelor's degree in industrial design, user experience design, anthropology, human factors engineering, biomedical engineering, or related field.
  • 5-8 years of relevant work experience, or a combination of education and experience
  • In-depth knowledge of design research, qualitative research and /or the human centered design process/methods
  • Good understanding of Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Quality System regulations, European Active Implantable & Medical Device Regulations, and relevant medical device principles
  • In-depth understanding of participant moderation and observation methods, personas, customer journey/workflow maps, user need documentation, analysis/synthesis methods, and storytelling methods
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Expert ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and projects
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and white boarding apps like Miro

Preferred:
  • Strong visual design skills
  • Proficient at Figma
  • Master's degree in design, anthropology, human factors engineering, biomedical engineering
  • Experience working within the Biodesign process
  • Experience in having direct reports, managing both their individual project challenges and career development
