Careers That Change Lives

As a member of the Medtronic Diabetes - Continuous Glucose Monitoring Sensor R&D team, this Principal Engineer will assist with the ideation, design, development and validation of Medtronic's next generation micro-fabricated bio-sensors. The Principal Engineer position is in the Sensor & Substrate Design team of Sensor R&D. This group has three main functions consisting of designing flexible electrode arrays and waferscale substrates, developing novel materials and fabrication processes to enable new sensing capabilities and improve performance, and devicelevel integration in Product Development. The Principal Engineer will support all three functions of the group to varying degrees over time based on business needs and all phases of Product Development.

DIABETES OPERATING UNIT

The Diabetes Operating Unitfocuses on improving the lives of those within the global diabetes community. As a business, we strive to empower people with diabetes to live life on their terms by delivering innovation that truly matters and providing support in the ways they need it. We're committed to meeting people with diabetes where they are in their journey, always with an aim to make theirlives easier. Our portfolio of innovative solutions are designed to provide customers greater freedom and better health, helping them achieve better glucose control, while spending less time managing their disease.

Engineers create our market-leading portfolio of innovations. Join us to make a lasting impact. Help bring the next generation of life-changing medical technology to patients worldwide.

A Day in the Life

This individual will provide technical leadership in electrochemical materials and biosensor design, with core competencies in material science, formulation & additive manufacturing processes, and electrochemical device design. At the outset, this individual will focus on early phase sensor prototyping and preclinical deployment of glucose and multianalyte sensors. This includes leading the design feasibility, process feasibility and device implementation of novel materials (e.g., electrocatalytic, redox mediator, carbon-based, barrier membrane, and polymer materials) and collaborating across teams to bring new technologies from benchtop feasibility to clinical maturity, then through design optimization and the Product Development Phases (PDP). There is a strong emphasis on engineering fundamentals, literature review, handson experimentation, and statistical methods. There is also a focus on project management, technical strategy, and mentoring of junior engineers to advance early phase technology initiatives into the PDP. The individual will play a key role in assessing design-process and design-equipment interactions and developing relevant test methods to evaluate these interactions. They will also demonstrate design capability related to product requirements, ensure successful product integration of the sensor subsystem, and support design verification activities.

While under guidance of a technical manager, the engineer will be expected to perform independently, mentor junior engineers, and is responsible for experimental & process design, data analysis, troubleshooting processes, collaborating within and across functions, and writing technical documentation. The individual will work with other engineers and technicians to execute experiments and accomplish project objectives. They will manage an agreed schedule to achieve project goals in a fast paced environment within specified timelines and resources.

There is a strong technical development path available to successful candidates and the engineer will have the opportunity to grow their responsibilities and scope over time. This individual will also have the opportunity to collaborate in cross-functional development teams as a technical subject matter expert, particularly with electrochemical materials and biosensor design. There will be communication to management on a regular basis through presentations and reports, and the individual must have the ability to effectively convey project updates to internal and external stakeholders (vendors, equipment manufacturers, etc.).

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, please ensure the minimum requirements are evident in your applicant profile.

Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Chemistry or Physics and 7+ years professional experience in R&D, product development or engineering
