Outbound marketing and communication platform team's mission is to proactively engage Amazon's worldwide customers through multiple communication channels (i.e., Email, SMS, Mobile Apps), to help fulfill their shopping missions. We aim to meet customers at their preferred communication channels with the most relevant content at the right time and frequency. Outbound provides a large-scale ML-driven platform for thousands of partners and systems at Amazon to author, build, and execute marketing strategies at scale to accomplish business goals. We enable, protect, and optimize the customer's messaging experience encompassing all aspects of transactional to traditional marketing campaigns. At scale, Outbound send hundreds of billions of messages across the planet with billions in bottom line impact for Amazon. Our strategy for the next three years focuses on building world-class marketing platforms for targeting and content generation, developing immersive and meaningful analytics tools, enabling rapid experimentation, and expanding our reach to all Amazon customers (new and existing). While we expand and enrich individual marketing channels - we also optimize marketing campaigns that represents the full Amazon customer experience across the intersection of shopping and entertainment through Prime Video, Amazon Music, Twitch, and Audible.
The mission of Outbound Science is to innovate and develop scalable ML solutions to provide personalized content recommendation when Amazon decides to send a messages highlight products and services across it's multiple lines of business. The team is hiring Principal Applied Scientist who has a solid background in applied Machine Learning, Large Language Models, and a proven record of solving customer-facing problems via scalable ML solutions, and is motivated to grow professionally as an ML science leader. The role will be responsible for partnering with a large software team and other scientists in the team to define the roadmap to build modern cloud based solutions to address diverse needs of our partners, high velocity experimentation and highly reliable services to render dynamic content at scale to millions of Amazon customers. The team is looking for a Principal Scientist to define the scientific vision and the foundational primitives for the Outbound Science Organization.
Key job responsibilities
* Act as the technical leader in Machine Learning, Large Language Models, and drive full life-cycle Machine Learning projects.
* Lead technical efforts within this team and collaboration with other science teams.
* Build machine learning models, perform proof-of-concept, experiment, optimize, and deploy your models into production.
* Run A/B experiments, gather data, and perform statistical tests.
* Establish scalable, efficient, automated processes for large-scale data mining, machine-learning model development, model validation and serving.
* Work closely with junior scientists, software engineers and product managers to assist in productizing your ML models.
* Establish new research initiatives to shape our long-term science vision.
* Act as a mentor to other Scientists on the team.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
* PhD in CS, Statistics, or a related discipline
* 8+ years of experience in industry, consulting, government, or academic research.
* Effective verbal and written communications skills
* Track record of thought leadership and contributions that have advanced the field.
* Strong skills in collaboration and teamwork
* Strong record of delivery in industry and academic contexts using Machine Learning
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Published research work in academic conferences or industry circles.
* Technical leadership in large-scale machine learning, deep learning, and large language models for recommendation systems
* Thinks strategically and staying on top of tactical execution.
* Exhibits excellent business judgment and understanding of science, engineering, and business trade-offs.
Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $159,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
