Prin Design Supt Specialist

The Principal Design Support Specialist provides hands on design and technical support in the development, assembly, and test of engineering prototype and production products, and has extensive experience with military weapons to enable successful program execution. Operates under minimal supervision by management and by project engineers when applying the principles, concepts, and practices of their discipline.

The Principal Design Support Specialist is responsible for:

• Supporting field maintenance & customer support activities including travel to CONUS & OCONUS locations

• Building and maintaining prototype and production hardware

• Supporting material review (MRB) and change control boards (CCB) for development and production

• Conducting engineering and development tests, including contributing to test plans and reports

• Supporting product demonstrations, which may include firing weapons, onsite and at customer facilities

• Providing input on designs and design changes

• Providing hands on knowledge of products and their functions • Promoting and maintaining safety even in challenging situations

• Participating in failure analysis investigations, including formal root cause analysis and corrective action

• Maintaining, operating, servicing, and repairing assigned product and equipment

The Principal Design Support Specialist will demonstrate proficiency in more than one engineering discipline or in a scientific discipline, and must possess or be capable of rapidly developing the following skills and knowledge areas:

• Fundamental knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing needed to read and interpret product definition
• Knowledge of drawing and specification application to product definition
• Mechanical and/or electrical fundamentals needed to make decisions that ensure safe and reliable operation of products
• Hands on capabilities to assemble and disassemble prototype and production hardware using tools
• Advanced knowledge of product inspection tools and techniques
• Advanced machining capability needed to operate machines such as a mill and lathe is desirable
• Knowledge of safe handling of ammunition and explosives
• Knowledge of data acquisition systems
• Failure analysis, root cause, and corrective action tools and techniques needed to quickly and efficiently solve problems
• Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing, Assembly, and Cost (DFM/DFA/DTC) tools and techniques is desirable
• Use of computer aided engineering tools to the level of reviewing drawings and models is desirable
• Use of Microsoft Office tools

Education

Required:  Associate’s degree or equivalent in applicable engineering/technical discipline.

Preferred:  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in applicable engineering/technical discipline.
