Under the supervision of the Youth on Fire Program Manager proactively engage homeless and street-involved youth by establishing rapport and readily responding to individual needs in the program’s drop-in space; (2) provide harm reduction materials, supportive referrals, and Prevention Case management to YOF members, and; (3) work with the YOF team to create a safe and supportive environment in the drop-in center.


Representative Duties:

  • Provide clients with easily accessible and low-threshold services that operate within the harm reduction framework. This includes enrolling participants in program services, conducting basic risk assessments, and assisting participants with accessing support services on a walk-in, triage, and as-needed basis.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the drop-in space by proactively engaging participants, responding to service needs, safety issues and provide general support through active listening.
  • Work with the YOF staff to create a safe and supportive environment in the drop-in center.
  • Provide written and verbal harm reduction information on safer sex strategies, substance use, overdose prevention, incarceration, sex work, street safety, GLBTQ issues, and HIV, STI and Hepatitis transmission.
  • Assist participants in accessing medical and social services such as primary care, drug treatment, mental health and legal advocacy.
  • Assist with the operation of the drop-in center’s nutrition program.
  • Promote all related services available at Youth on Fire, throughout AAC and with collaborating programs, including Syringe Exchange and GLBT Health programs.
  • Provide assistance to clinic nurse with HIV and STI counseling and testing sessions including paperwork and packaging specimens. Provide STI counseling and testing to participants if needed.
  • Complete all required paperwork and data entry including referrals, drop-in space visits, risk reduction sessions, follow-up needs, counseling and testing, and participant feedback.
  • Assist with community presentations on services available at Youth on Fire.
  • Attend and participate in program, department, management and staff meetings and trainings as well as funder and stakeholder meetings as requested

  • Adhere to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; enforce agency’s policies and clinical procedures, including safety and crisis procedures.
  • Attend all required meetings, in-services and professional trainings
  • Maintains professional competence necessary to perform job responsibilities; maintains and provides agency with records of continuing education activities

Perform related duties and projects as assigned

Requirements:
  • 2 - 5 years’ experience working with marginalized youth/ young adults
  • Significant knowledge of health-related, social, and legal issues faced by homeless youth.
  • Knowledge of youth development principles and practices as well as trauma informed services.
  • Strong crisis management, de-escalation, and group facilitation skills.
  • Commitment to practice harm reduction in all interactions with program participants.
  • Understand importance of confidentiality and boundaries in prevention and education work.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a multi-cultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, age, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and physical ability is an institutional and programmatic value.
  • Ability to be punctual and perform tasks consistently during scheduled work hours.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds on occasion
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours
  • Ability to support the mission and goals of the program and agency
  • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with colleagues, patients, clients and vendors across the spectrum of diversity, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, color, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, national origin and immigrant status, religious or spiritual identity, disability (physical, mental, emotional and developmental), veteran status, and/or limited English proficiency.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to meet the following physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations:

Supervisory Responsibility:

Assists with supervision of program volunteers and interns.
