Summary
We are looking for a Preservation Planner to join to join the City of Charleston's Planning, Preservation, & Sustainability Department! In this role, you will implement comprehensive plans, zoning ordinances, and programs for utilization of land and facilities of the City and surrounding areas.
Examples of Duties
- Acts as staff public contact for BAR (Board of Architectural Review) and DRB (Design Review Board) inquiries assessing projects for immediate approval, or referral to the City Architect/Preservation Officer or Board review.
- Attends BAR and/or DRB Board meetings.
- Processes BAR and DRB applications by reviewing requirements with applicants and assisting with plan modifications.
- Assists the City Architect/Preservation Officer in processing project reviews, and in preparing for BAR Board meetings including preparation of PowerPoint presentations.
- Investigates violations, and acts as liaison with the public, to explain and enforce related Ordinances and assist with administrative procedures and regulations.
- Reviews applications for signage within the historic districts as well as suburban areas of the City overseen by the Design Review Board.
- Monitors construction projects through site inspections including final review of approved projects for comparison with approved documents.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- One year related professional experience
- Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) in Historic Preservation, Architecture, Urban Planning, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of architectural preservation measures and general knowledge of construction methods and techniques.
- Design sensibility, and ability to critique architectural design proposals of varying scale
- Ability to read and understand architectural drawings
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills
- Valid South Carolina Driver’s License
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat, or similar software
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation, Architecture, Urban Planning or related field
