Floater Assistant Teacher - CUMBO Pre-School

Reports to: Center Director

Program/Department: Laurie A. Cumbo Children’s Enrichment Center/Early Childhood Program

Work Location: 180 Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11201

Hours: Full Time - Monday - Friday 8am-4pm

This position is fully in-person and does not offer any remote work.

Salary Range: $31,601 - $34,494

Position Summary

Our Early Childhood program is designed to enhance the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language development of young children through high quality educational and social services for themselves and their families. Teacher Aides support the delivery of those high quality services by helping classroom teachers implement lesson plans, facilitate classroom management and ensure student to teacher ratios.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide substitute and other coverage to classrooms as needed

  • Responsible for food handling and preparation, including warming prepared meals, slicing fruit, distributing meals, and cleanup

  • Assist Lead Teacher in planning age appropriate, high quality activities designed to support increased learning in young children through developmentally appropriate practices.

  • Assist Lead Teacher in the daily supervision of children and effecting sound classroom management and curriculum activities.

  • Promoting physical, intellectual, social, cultural, and emotional well-being of students / children.

  • Providing adequate supervision of all children / students during all enrichment / learning activities.

  • Share in all student and classroom record keeping tasks i.e. daily attendance, meal counts, daily health checks; Conduct observations and assessments of children and the classroom environment; Assist Lead Teacher with entering all observations into Teaching Strategies.

  • Participate with Lead and Assistant Teachers in conducting quarterly parent teacher conferences.

  • Participate in all classroom activities, field trips and all related classroom routines i.e. meal service, circle time activities, toileting, assisting children in changing soiled clothing.

  • Actively engage with children and their activities; Teach children through their play, all concepts necessary to achieve developmental levels i.e. colors; shapes; differentiation of letters and numbers; sounds of letters; quantities of numbers; help build and expand child’s thinking through the appropriate use of questioning techniques, i.e. open-ended knowledge questions, comprehension and analysis questions, etc.

  • Ensure the safety of all children at all times through maintaining a direct line of vision supervision as per Article 47.23; Ensure safety of children by keeping an accurate count of all children in attendance at all times of the day – morning arrival and evening dismissal.

  • Ensure classroom furnishings, materials and environment is maintained in a neat, clean and safe manner at all times.

  • Actively participate in team meetings and supervision sessions. Collaborate with a team to implement a high-quality learning environment.

  • Assume the role and duties of the Lead Teacher in the absence of Lead Teacher.

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents and families of children served. Maintain open communication and professional relationships with colleagues and administrators.

  • Ability to work multiple shifts and/or staggered shifts to provide extra coverage to assist in maintaining proper ratios as set forth by NYCDOHMH and Article 47.23; assist with evening special events; parent meetings, etc.

  • Work within the framework of the Brooklyn Community Service in carrying out its policies and procedures;

  • Participate in agency wide groups and meetings as required

  • Assist with development of funding proposals as needed

  • Participate in other related duties, as assigned and consistent with above.

Qualifications Required:

  • High School Diploma.

  • One year of previous teaching experience in N – 2nd grade promoting healthy growth and development with toddlers and preschoolers.

  • Comprehensive criminal background check and fingerprinting is required.

    • Physical Requirements:

      • Ability to lift and carry children, supplies and equipment as needed between 30-50 pounds.

      • Ability to walk up and down stairs.

      • Physically able to participate in and to perform physical activities with children, i.e. Gym.

      • Required to talk, hear, see, stand, walk, sit, use hands & arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, & crawl.

      • Ability to read printed materials and computer screens; ability to operate computer keyboards and mouse.

      • Ability to operate Microsoft computer systems; connect to the internet, access trainings online.

      • Ability to commute between sites for meetings, trainings, in-services, and home visits.

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Food Handlers Certification

  • Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Development preferred.

  • Good collaboration and communication skills.

  • Experience with behavior modification activities.

  • Ability to be a team player.

  • Good leadership and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to assist Lead Teacher with active student engagement as well as productive classroom supervision.

  • Ability to assist Lead Teacher with classroom management.

  • Available and willing to travel to professional /staff development training or workshops.

  • Available and willing to work evening hours this includes program shows, staff meetings, field trips, and/or medical emergencies.
