Job Summary
Coordinates and provides instruction to new and tenured clinical staff related to orientation and ongoing competency assessments utilizing a variety of settings and methodologies, including classroom education, skills lab and assimilation labs for competency checkoffs. Partners with nursing leadership and educator supervisor in determining skills assessed for competency as well as appropriate evaluation methods for each. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates ongoing education to meet organizational needs. Serves as a professional clinical resource for internal and external customers. Incorporates critical thinking skills, evidence-based practice and quality into all educational activities.
Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Licensure or other certifications: Registered Nurse currently licensed in Georgia. Current BLS certification.
  • Educational Requirements: Associates Degree
  • Minimum Experience: Five (5) years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Must complete initial Preceptor Education course and update course annually. Must meet all minimum requirements according to job description.

Job Specific and Unique Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Preceptor coordinates General Orientation of new employees under the direction of the Nurse Education Supervisor including new hire paperwork, completion of Orientation Manual and all items on the department and discipline checklists. Reviews Patient Admission Book with new orientees and plans time for orientee self-study for all disciplines.
  • Schedules ride a-longs for new hires with the interdisciplinary team
  • Participates in initial and annual skills check off for Hospice Aides utilizing the HA Competency/Evaluation Checklist, participates in initial and annual skills checkoff for RN/LPN's utilizing the appropriate competency evaluation checklists for Hospice
  • Preceptor RN to be knowledgeable and educate clinical staff regarding EMR training and documentation, Pharmacy Vendor Online Education and teaching resources available as well as reporting in the Variance Reporting System
  • Preceptor will serve as a professional resource to new and existing employees as evidenced by formal and informal feedback

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Preceptor to make joint visits with new orientees for skills checkoff unless designated to another discipline with discussion of primary concerns noted in the visit. Discuss patient plan of care and follow-up.
  • Preceptor to continue to schedule and make one (1) - two (2) joint (routine/prn) visits with RNs/LPNs for a designated period of time to be determined by Preceptor/Nurse Education Supervisor. RN/LPN completes patient assessment and documentation. Preceptor will serve as a resource and provide direction for documentation to ensure requirements are met.
  • Preceptor to guide and instruct nursing staff in the documentation and reviews documentation for new nurse orientees, providing feedback and instruction with recommendations for revisions based on orientees progress.
  • Preceptor to solicit opportunities from primary nurses for new RN/LPNs to perform skills that are needed to complete competencies.
  • Preceptor to attend IDT with primary RN and educate on patient presentation to IDT along with documentation requirements.
  • Preceptor to continue to provide ongoing assistance with documentation, scheduling, skills, etc. for struggling employees as identified by supervisors.
  • Preceptor will provide input and assist with updates to the Manifesto.
  • Preceptor will work with the Clinical Workgroup and all nursing staff to reach and maintain high standards of documentation.
  • Preceptor will participate in meetings and committees as assigned (QAPI, Peer Review, Nursing, Hospice Aides, and staff meetings) and serve on any other committees as needed.
  • Preceptor will provide ongoing feedback to supervisor on progress of new employees.
  • Preceptor will demonstrate effective project management, critical thinking skills, productivity and clinical expertise while functioning both independently and as member of a team.
  • Preceptor will utilize clinical expertise in assisting nursing staff, students and/or orientees with difficult or unusual procedures.
  • Preceptor will assist Education Supervisor with staff development programs as needed.
  • Preceptor will evaluate the technical skills of staff nurses utilizing the skills checklist and provide feedback to the Nurse Education Supervisor.
  • Preceptor will adapt schedule to meet impromptu needs of Hospice staff providing direct patient care.
  • Preceptor will work with all primary nurses on standardizing practices.
  • Preceptor will be knowledgeable of requirements for all clinical disciplines.
  • Participates in clinical, admission, or intake on-call rotation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
