PRE-TRIAL OFFICER/COURT INVESTIGATOR WITH THE MARION COUNTY

The Marion County Court of Common Pleas, General Division, Adult Probation
Department is seeking a motivated, independent, self-starter to serve as Pre-Trial
Officer/Court Investigator with the Adult Probation Department.

As a Pre-Trial Officer, the successful candidate will conduct initial interviews with and criminal record checks of alleged offenders to determine whether the individual is appropriate for the pre-trial release program. The Pre-Trial Officer will supervise those offenders Court-ordered into the pre-trial release program to ensure compliance with bond conditions. The Pre-trial Officer will also prepare written bond violation notices and reports. As Court Investigator, the successful applicant will conduct thorough investigations, including but not limited to, obtaining the official version of the instant offense, the defendant's version of the offense, adjudications of the defendant as a delinquent child, criminal history as an adult, social history including family, marital, educational, substance abuse, and employment history of felony offenders who have been ordered by the Court to undergo a pre-sentence investigation (“PSI”). The Court Investigator will also conduct investigations of offenders requesting Intervention in Lieu of Convictions, Judicial
Release, and Sealing of Records. The Court Investigator will prepare written reports at the conclusion of these investigations. In both roles, the successful applicant may be required to monitor offenders on house arrest and/or GPS; conduct alcohol and/or drug tests; arrest offenders; transport offenders to correctional and/or treatment facilities; testify at various court hearings; conduct meetings with offenders both in the office and in the field; and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Applicant must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution in the field of criminal justice, criminology, psychology, or a related field; OR an associate’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, social services, case management, counseling, or a related field and two or more years of relevant experience.

Applicant must have strong oral, written, and computer communication skills as well as knowledge of Microsoft Office. Applicant must work well under the pressure of court deadlines and timely submit PSIs and all investigations. Applicant must not be prohibited from carrying a firearm. OPOTA firearms certification and Ohio Risk Assessment Systems
(“ORAS”) certification preferred.

Special Requirements: Pre-employment screening required including employment references, criminal background check, and possible drug and skill testing. Candidate will be required to successfully complete the Probation Officer Academy Training within the first year of employment. ORAS and OPOTA Firearm certification and qualification required during the probationary period. Completion of the OPOTA firearms qualification course requires a one-year commitment. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and no prohibition against carrying firearms. Although minimal, some evening and weekend hours are required. This position reports directly to the Chief Probation Officer and Deputy
Court Administrator for the Marion County Court of Common Pleas, General Division.
Knowledge and understanding of computer databases preferred. Proficiency in record keeping, report writing, and problem solving required. Strong understanding of the legal processes associated with the criminal justice system preferred.

This position is regularly exposed to sensitive information and the incumbent is required to keep any such information strictly confidential.

The successful applicant will have a one-year probationary period.

The Adult Probation Department consists of 11 probation officers, an office manager, and an administrative assistant.
