Salary Range: $16.06-$21.31
SUMMARY: Works cooperatively with the classroom teacher to:
  • Create a developmentally appropriate pre-kindergarten program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth
  • Establish effective rapport with students and their families
  • Motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for Elementary School
  • Establish good relationships with other staff members and community agencies

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
The educational technician:
  • Assists in planning and evaluating daily classroom activities
  • Communicates effectively with pre-kindergarten children 3-5 years of age and adults from a variety of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Assists in completing/maintaining accurate student files, forms, and reports to document and track the needs of students and services provided on a timely basis
  • Assists in establishing trusting relationships with children and families; welcome, encourage, and support parent participation in the program, and maintain the confidentiality of families, staff and program
  • Communicates regularly with students' families by means of home visits, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior that lead to an effective learning atmosphere
  • Assists in identifying student needs and making appropriate referrals
  • Works with other support staff and district specialists as appropriate
  • Assists in providing individualized and small group instruction to meet the needs of each student
  • Assists in creating an environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers, and exhibits of students' work
  • Attends required workshops and meetings

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises students in various settings including but not limited to the classroom, cafeteria, and playground.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and Experience: Three years of post secondary education or 90 hours of approved study in a related area
Language Skills:
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations
  • Ability to model a positive attitude and appropriate tone of voice with a proper choice of words when communicating with families, children, and coworkers

Mathematical Skills:
  • Ability to add subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
  • Ability to create and interpret graphs

Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Previous experience in preschool or primary education
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Committee policies

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. The employee should be able to get down on the floor with children for floor time activities such as circle time or in the block area. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 pounds such as a child in an emergency. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and staff.
