Responsibilities
The Practical Nurse Extern (PNE) provides basic care under the direction and supervision of a licensed or registered professional nurse. The PNE role is designed to provide an experiential learning opportunity for students to evolve towards professional practice through the acquisition of basic clinical skillsand advancing their knowledge related to patient care. PNEs promote a positive patient experience by partnering with the patient,family,and other health care providers to provide excellence in customer service and assistance with patient flow, and the delivery of safe, quality care.
The PNE assists other health care providers with safe, age appropriate and culturally competent careby performing basic patient care functions,i.e.,vital signs, history taking, preparing patients for provider examination, patient communication and otherduties deemed necessary. The PNE must be able to work in a fast-pacedenvironment which requires multitasking activities and ongoingcommunication with the care team. Must be able to perform under stressful conditions with acompassionate, respectful,and helpful manner. Must be able to take direction from a variety of care providers. Must be organized with excellent communication skills.
Qualifications
Required Minimum Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Current and ongoing enrollment in an accredited practical nursing program.
Required MinimumCertification:
- Must have current BLS from the American Heart Association by the first day of employment.
Required MinimumExperience:
- As a part of enrollment in an accredited practical nursing program, successful completion of fundamentals class and first clinical rotation.
